Condri Plantain: A Taste of Cameroon’s Rich Culinary Heritage.
Hi guys, accept steem greetings from the motherland, Cameroon, and welcome to my blog where I will be revealing some of Cameroon’s rich culinary content. Today I will share one of the delicacies popularly known as “condri plantain”.

Condri Plantain is one of those special Cameroonian delicacies that captures the very soul of home cooking. Known for its rich flavour, cultural roots, and nourishing ingredients, this traditional dish holds a special place in the hearts of many, especially among the Bayangi and other communities in the South West and North West Regions of Cameroon.
It is prepared mainly with semi-ripe plantains and a delicious mix of condiments. Condri Plantain is indeed more than just food; it is a symbol of family, community, and identity.
At its core, Condri Plantain is a partly leafy vegetable and plantain dish cooked with vegetable oil, spices, and sometimes smoked fish or meat but I preferred it cooked with chicken.

Traditionally, the leaves are carefully washed and sliced before being mixed with the rest of the ingredients. What makes Condri Plantain unique is the balance of flavours, the sweetness of ripe plantains blending beautifully with the earthy taste of the condri leaves and the richness of vegetable oil.
The preparation process, though simple, is a labour of love. First, the chicken is boiled with some seasoning, drained and fried for a few minutes and the condri leaves are boiled to soften them.
Meanwhile, semi-ripe plantains are peeled and cut into medium-sized chunks. In a large pot, vegetable oil is heated gently, and then onions, ground crayfish, and a mix of local spices like pepper, garlic, and njansa are added for aroma. Smoked fish or pieces of dry meat can also be included for added flavour and texture but I used moist chicken. Once the sauce is well-seasoned, the condri leaves are stirred in, followed by the plantain pieces. Everything is allowed to simmer together until the flavours meld perfectly. The result is a soft, aromatic, and deeply satisfying meal that is both hearty and comforting.

What truly sets Condri Plantain apart is its cultural significance. It is not just a dish you eat; it brings people together. In many Cameroonian homes, it is prepared during weekends, family gatherings, or festive occasions. When the aroma of condri fills the air, it signals that something special is happening. Women often gather in the kitchen to wash and slice the leaves while sharing stories and laughter. In this way, cooking Condri Plantain becomes a communal activity that strengthens bonds and preserves tradition.
Nutritionally, the dish is also a winner. The condri leaves are rich in vitamins and iron, the plantains provide energy and fibre, and the vegetable oil adds essential fats. It is a perfect example of how traditional African dishes can be both tasty and healthy, offering a balanced meal without the need for artificial seasonings.
In today’s fast-paced world, where modern dishes often overshadow traditional ones, Condri Plantain remains a proud reminder of Cameroon’s culinary heritage. It tells the story of a people who take pride in their roots and find joy in the simple act of sharing a wholesome meal. Every bite carries the warmth of home, the richness of culture, and the essence of Cameroon.
In sum, Condri Plantain is a dish that speaks the language of love, heritage, and togetherness. It perfectly goes with a glass of palm wine.
