One Picture One Story

Hi guys, accept special Steem greetings from the motherland of Cameroon and welcome to my blog where I’m gonna share a story about plantain chips.

In many homes across Cameroon, the simple plantain tells a powerful story, one of culture, resilience, and creativity. From the lush green farms where bunches of plantain grow under the tropical sun to the golden, crunchy chips enjoyed as snacks, plantain is more than just food. It is a small business opportunity, a family tradition, and a taste of home.

The journey of plantain chips begins on the farm. Farmers harvest fresh, green plantains carefully from their trees. At this stage, the plantains are firm and ready to make chips. The sight of a full bunch resting on the ground, surrounded by green leaves and rich soil, is a common scene in rural communities across Cameroon. For many farmers, this harvest represents not only nourishment but also income.

Once harvested, the plantains are peeled and sliced into thin pieces. Some people slice them lengthwise, while others cut them into small round shapes. The slices are then washed and seasoned lightly with salt. In some homes, a pinch of pepper or spices may be added to give the chips a special flavour.

Next comes the most exciting part frying. The plantain slices are dropped into hot oil where they slowly transform from pale green to a beautiful golden yellow. The aroma of fresh chips spreads through the air. Within minutes, the slices become crispy and delicious. Once removed from the oil and allowed to cool, they become the crunchy snack that so many people love.

Plantain chips are popular everywhere in Cameroon. You will find them in small roadside stalls, markets, schools, and even packaged neatly in shops and supermarkets. Children love them as an after-school snack, while adults enjoy them during conversations, travels, or while relaxing at home.

But behind this simple snack is often a story of entrepreneurship. Many women and young people have turned plantain chips production into small businesses. With just a few ingredients such as plantains, oil, salt, and a stove, they can create a product that sells quickly in local communities. It is common to see transparent bags filled with neatly packed chips hanging in front of small shops or carried in baskets by street vendors.

For some families, this business helps pay school fees, buy household essentials, and support daily living. It is proof that even simple local foods can create economic opportunities when creativity and determination are involved.

Plantain chips also represent the beauty of transforming local resources into something valuable. Cameroon is blessed with fertile land where plantains grow abundantly. Instead of letting excess harvest go to waste, people process them into chips that last longer and can be transported easily. This not only reduces waste but also adds value to agricultural products.

In many homes, preparing them is a shared activity. Family members gather to peel, slice, and fry while chatting and laughing. The process becomes a moment of bonding, passing down cooking traditions from one generation to the next.

So the next time you enjoy a handful of crispy plantain chips, remember the journey behind them, from the green farms of Cameroon to the warm kitchens where they are carefully prepared. What seems like a simple snack actually carries a story of culture, hard work, and community.

And sometimes, the most powerful stories are the ones that start with something as simple as a bunch of green plantains and end with the satisfying crunch of a homemade chip.
