Three Days of Horror in Limbe: Floodwaters, Losses, and a City Brought to Its Knees.

Hi guys, accept warm Steem greetings from the motherland of Cameroon, and welcome to my blog as I share 03 horrific days in Limbe as floodwaters brought our city to a standstill.

The past three days have been among the most terrifying and heartbreaking I have witnessed in my city, Limbe. What started as heavy rainfall quickly turned into a nightmare as floodwaters swallowed roads, homes, and businesses, leaving thousands of residents stranded and helpless. The intensity of the downpour, combined with the city's poor drainage system, created a disaster that will remain in our memories for a very long time.

The rain fell relentlessly, hour after hour, with no sign of stopping. Rivers overflowed their banks, gutters could no longer contain the water, and streets transformed into dangerous streams. Within a short time, many parts of Limbe became inaccessible. It was practically impossible to move around town. Vehicles were trapped in deep water, while many others broke down after attempting to cross flooded roads. Public transport came to a standstill, and people who had urgent errands had no choice but to remain indoors, hoping the waters would eventually recede.

One of the saddest aspects of this tragedy is that several homes were either partially or completely destroyed. Families watched helplessly as floodwaters invaded their living rooms, carrying away furniture, household appliances, clothing, and other valuables they had worked so hard to acquire. For many, years of hard work disappeared within a few hours. Some people had to abandon their homes in the middle of the night, seeking refuge with neighbours, friends, or relatives in safer areas.

Even more heartbreaking are the reports of lives lost during this disaster. Every life lost is a painful reminder that natural disasters become far more devastating when our infrastructure is unable to cope with extreme weather. My thoughts and prayers are with every family mourning the loss of a loved one. No words can truly comfort those who have experienced such unimaginable pain.

The poor drainage system has once again exposed one of the city's biggest challenges. Every rainy season brings fears of flooding, but this time the situation was far worse than many of us expected. Blocked drains, inadequate drainage channels, and uncontrolled runoff only made matters worse. As climate patterns continue to change and heavy rainfall becomes more frequent, investing in better drainage infrastructure is no longer an option, it is a necessity if we are to prevent future tragedies.

These past three days have also taught many of us an important lesson about preparedness. During disasters like this, stepping outside becomes almost impossible. Roads are blocked, shops remain closed, and transportation is unavailable. Around here, if you haven't stocked enough food and other essentials at home before the rains begin, then, as we often jokingly say, "…you will smell the carcass of a dead rat." In other words, you are left with no options and forced to endure whatever situation comes your way until conditions improve.

Despite everything, I have also witnessed remarkable acts of kindness. Neighbours opened their doors to displaced families, young people assisted the elderly in crossing safer paths, and community members shared food and drinking water with those in need. Moments like these remind us that even in the darkest times, humanity shines brightly.

As the rains gradually subside, I sincerely hope the relevant authorities will not allow this disaster to become just another headline that fades with time. Limbe deserves a resilient drainage system, proper urban planning, and preventive measures that protect both lives and property. My prayers remain with everyone affected by this heartbreaking disaster, and I hope our beautiful city can recover stronger than before.
