The Diary Game:Took my Sick Dog for a walk 31st may 2026

My dog Max hasn’t been himself this week. The vet said it’s just a stomach bug, nothing serious, but he’s been sleeping all day and barely touching his food. No tail wags. No barking at the postman. Just quiet.

Today he looked up at me when I grabbed his leash out of habit. His eyes said “maybe?” So I figured we’d try. One slow lap around the block. If he wanted to stop, we’d stop.

The first 20 meters were rough. He moved like an old man, head down, sniffing less than usual. I kept the leash loose and let him set the pace. Halfway down the street, something shifted. He saw a squirrel. Didn’t chase it, but his ears perked up. First time in 3 days.

We sat on the curb for a while. He leaned against my leg, heavy. A neighbor walked past and said, “He’s looking better already.” I don’t know if that’s true, but Max wagged once. Just once. I’ll take it.

We didn’t make it around the block. We made it to the corner and back. 10 minutes total. But when we got home, he drank water on his own and curled up in his bed instead of the bathroom floor.

Sick dogs don’t need a marathon. They need to remember they’re still part of the world. Fresh air, a patch of sun, one squirrel. That’s medicine too.

If your dog is sick right now: ask your vet first, always. But if they clear a short walk, do it. Go slow. Bring water. Let them sniff. And don’t worry about distance. Some days, healing looks like 50 steps and one tail wag.

Max is snoring next to me as I type this. That’s enough for today
