Eating Before Brushing in the Morning — Am I the Only One Who Does This?
Good morning Steem family 👋 I hope everyone is having a beautiful start to the day. Before you fully dive into today’s activities and habits, let me draw your attention to something small, yet surprisingly important.
Lately, I’ve been paying attention to one small habit of mine that I never really questioned before.
On mornings when I eat early, I usually eat before brushing my teeth.
Not because I’m lazy or rushing — but because I genuinely feel toothpaste interferes with the real taste of food. Once I brush, everything tastes minty or strange, and it takes a while before meals feel normal again. So on days I wake up hungry, I just go straight to food first.
I know I’m not the only person who does this, which made me curious enough to actually look into it and started questioning this habit of mine, I Asked;
Is it okay?
Does it affect the mouth?
Is there any health risk?
Which prompted me to make this research and it turns out… there’s more to it than I thought.
breakfast and toothbrush, which do you choose first?
What I found is that dentists generally recommend brushing before breakfast, not after.
The reason is simple: while we sleep, bacteria multiply in our mouths. That’s why we wake up with “morning breath.” Brushing first helps remove that bacteria buildup and also coats your teeth with fluoride, which protects your enamel before food — especially acidic foods like tea, juice, bread, or fruits — touches your teeth.
On the other hand, eating first isn’t exactly “wrong.” The real issue comes when you brush immediately after eating.
Apparently, when you eat (especially acidic foods), your enamel becomes temporarily soft. If you brush right away, you may slowly wear it down over time. That surprised me.
So if you prefer eating before brushing — like me — dentists advise waiting about 20–60 minutes before brushing. This gives your saliva time to neutralize acids and protect your teeth naturally.
A simple rinse with water during that waiting period also helps.
If you choose breakfast first, don't brush immediately after the meal
Reading all this made me reflect on my own routine.
I realized that most of the time, I don’t even wait. I eat, then brush almost immediately.
Now that I know better, I’ll definitely try to adjust.
But beyond dental advice, this made me think about something deeper:
how many habits we practice daily without ever questioning them.
Sometimes we do things simply because they feel right, not because they’re best.
And that’s okay — growth starts with awareness.
Another thing I appreciated is understanding that comfort doesn’t always equal correctness. Yes, I like eating before brushing because food tastes better, but that doesn’t mean my teeth agree 😅.
So going forward, I’m learning to balance comfort with care.
If I eat first, I’ll rinse and wait before brushing.
If I can, I’ll brush first and eat later.
Small adjustments, better long-term results.
do you even have breakfast in the morning before going out?
What I love about moments like this is how they remind us that self-improvement doesn’t always come from big changes. Sometimes it starts with simple awareness — even something as small as when you brush your teeth.
So let me ask you:
Do you eat before brushing in the morning too, or are you team “brush first”?
Let’s talk 😊

Wow! your article is really educative, I actually have a friend who eats first without brushing though I normally tells her it's a bad habit, she will not listen but now I know better. I will definitely show her this post so she can get awareness through it.
Thank you for your comment and I'm glad my post can help you...
