Thediarygame: Cough, Chaos & ‘Avengers Assemble!’ — My Final Sunday in School -1/2/2026

Happy New Month everyone! 🎉

Today is Sunday, and normally, I would have been in church. In fact, I actually planned to go. But life had other plans.

For those seeing this post in this new group, quick recap: I’ve been battling a stubborn cough for days now — almost a week. I’ve tried everything from ginger to hot water remedies, medications, and even adjusting my diet. The cough has been persistent, especially at night. It doesn’t just disturb my chest; it steals sleep.

Last night was one of those nights.

I was awake till past 5am. Just there. Turning. Coughing. Trying to rest. Failing. So by the time morning came, church was no longer realistic. I finally slept off and didn’t wake up until past 11am — weak, sleepy, and slightly annoyed at my own body.

But today is special for another reason.

It’s my last weekend in school for this semester. I’ll be heading home tomorrow (Monday), and that realization hit differently. There’s something about “last” moments that makes you want to do something memorable.

And Sundays for me are always special cooking days. No matter how stressful the week has been, I try to make something better than the usual routine meals. Today, I decided to go all out — not just cooking for a few roommates like usual, but cooking for everyone.

If it’s the last Sunday here, let it count.

Of course, this wasn’t a solo mission. I reached out to one of my close roommates, explained the vision, and he contributed money. Teamwork makes the dream work 😌

We went to the market, bought vegetables, meat, and spices, and came back ready to execute the plan.

Back at the hostel, I washed and sliced the carrots, green peas, onions, and green pepper. There’s something calming about prepping vegetables — the quiet focus, the neat arrangement, the anticipation of how everything will come together.

I seasoned and boiled the meat first. Once it was soft, I parboiled the white rice. When the meat was done, I fried it lightly to give it that golden finish.

While all that was happening, the rice was sitting in a sieve, draining properly. And let me just say — the quantity was no joke. The rice was more than the pot could comfortably handle.

So when it was time to mix, I had to transfer it into a bigger bowl.

I made the vegetable sauce separately — rich, colorful, and smelling like something serious was about to happen. When the sauce was ready, I poured the rice into the big bowl and mixed everything thoroughly before transferring it back into the pot to steam properly.

A few more minutes on the fire… and it was ready.

Then came the best part.

When it was ready, I announced, in my best dramatic voice:

“Avengers… Assemble!” 😭

Everybody came out with their plates.

And in that moment, it felt good. Really good. Sharing food. Sharing laughter. Sharing the first day of a new month. Sharing my last Sunday in school this semester.

Despite the sleepless night.
Despite the cough.
Despite the exhaustion.

There was joy.

Sometimes it’s not about big achievements. Sometimes it’s just about cooking a pot of rice big enough for everyone and watching people eat happily.

As I prepare to head home tomorrow, I’m grateful for moments like this.

New month.
New beginnings.
And hopefully… less coughing.

One Sunday at a time 🌿
