Greetings, dear friends and fellow creatives; it's your favorite artist, @emmaboy23, here once again to share another drawing with you all. I am happy to share another artwork as my entry for the contest “Prove Yourself as the Best Artist This Week” hosted by @dequeen. For this contest, I decided to make a pencil portrait of a man with bold facial features and a confident expression. I enjoy portrait drawing because it teaches me patience, observation, and control. Every face has its own structure, and recreating that with pencil is always an exciting challenge. Here are the steps I used in making this portrait.

Drawing materials

• A4 paper

• graphite pencils

• 2B, 4B, 5B, 6B, and so on

• charcoal pencil

• sharpener

• eraser

Step-by-step procedure

Step 1

I start by drawing the eyes because they are the most expressive part of the portrait. I darkened the pupils and carefully shaped the eyelids and eyebrows. After that, I worked on the nose.

Step 2

Next, I carefully drew the lips, and I began to shade the face using my graphite pencils.

Step 3

After doing that, the next step is the hair. The hairstyle in the portrait has volume and flow, so I had to pay attention to its movement. I used deeper graphite tones in the darker sections and left lighter areas to act as highlights. This contrast helped me give the hair a textured appearance.

Step 4

After completing the hair, I then focused on the neck and clothing. I used my 2B pencil to shade the neck, and then I shaded the clothing with darker values to frame the portrait and make the face stand out more. I added the striped texture carefully to give the outfit some character.

Step 5

Here is where I add finishing touches to my drawing; I cleaned up some rough edges, adjusted a few shadows, and erased unnecessary lines. I also added details where necessary, and below is my final result.

This drawing was a rewarding process for me. It reminded me that portrait art is not only about copying a face but also about understanding form, balance, and expression. Thank you, @dequeen, for organizing this wonderful contest and giving artists the opportunity to share their creativity. I appreciate everyone who stopped by to view my work. Your support means a lot to me.
