Greetings, amazing Steemians,

I am happy to participate once again in this interesting contest titled "Prove Yourself as the Best Artist This Week" organized by @dequeen. Art is one of those beautiful things that allows us to communicate feelings without speaking a single word. Through pencils and paper, ideas become visible, and simple lines slowly transform into meaningful expressions. For my entry today, I created a pencil portrait of a smiling young lady with a playful expression. What drew my attention was the unique facial pose. The wink, smile, and relaxed pose gave the portrait a lively personality. Below is how I achieved this drawing.

Step 1

I began by drawing the facial features. I started with the eyes because they are one of the most expressive parts of a portrait. This drawing had a playful expression with one eye closed in a wink and the other eye open. Next, I worked on the nose and lips. Since the portrait had a smile, I paid attention to the shape of the mouth and the surrounding areas because smiling expressions create subtle shadows around the cheeks.

Step 2

Next, I moved on to shading the face. Shading gives life to a drawing because it transforms flat lines into a realistic image. I applied softer shades on the face and darker values where shadows naturally appeared.

Step 3

After doing that, I then worked on the hair. I started by sketching the major flow and direction of the hair strands before adding darker tones. Instead of pressing heavily immediately, I gradually built the shading in layers. Some areas were made darker while others remained lighter to create highlights.

Step 4

After doing that, I then shaded the neck and the clothing, and then I blended some sections carefully while preserving lighter areas to maintain contrast.

Step 5

Finally, after making final corrections and adding finishing touches, I completed the portrait. Below is my final result.
