Hello wonderful Steemians!

How are you all? I hope all is well. Today I am delighted to share another artwork with you all as my entry for the contest "Prove Yourself as the Best Artist This Week," organized by @dequeen. Every portrait carries a silent story, and as artists, our responsibility is to bring that story to life through lines, shades, and careful observation. For this week's challenge, I decided to challenge myself with a graphite pencil portrait of a young man with his head tilted upward, giving the drawing a thoughtful and inspiring mood. In this tutorial, I will walk you through the process I followed to complete the portrait.

Drawing process

Step 1

First, I started by lightly sketching the overall shape of the head and neck. Then I began defining the eyes, nose, and lips.

Step 2

After that, I moved on to shading. I used soft layers of graphite to create smooth skin tones and realistic shadows. I gradually developed the darker areas around the cheekbones, jawline, and under the chin.

Step 3

Next came the hair. The hair became the darkest area of the portrait. Rather than drawing individual strands, I first established the overall shape and shadow mass. Afterward, I added highlights and texture to give the hair more life and volume.

Step 4

After completing the hair, I then moved on to shading the neck, and I also worked carefully on the shirt folds and shadows around the neck.

Step 5

Finally, I reviewed the entire drawing and adjusted highlights using an eraser. Small corrections were made to improve balance and smooth transitions between light and dark areas.
