From Hand Stitching To Professional Designer

Growing up, I have always had a passion for sewing, making my own dresses and creating unique tailored designs. I remember how I used to hand stitch my clothes whenever they had a loose end. Watching my mom use a thread and needle to make beautiful outfits for my siblings and I was one of the things that inspired me deeply. From that moment, I already knew who I wanted to become. Fashion and sewing became something I admired and loved from a very young age.

Although my love for sewing started from childhood, the opportunity to fully embrace it came during my traditional marriage preparation. Before then, during my NYSC days, I decided to go for proper training to improve my knowledge in fashion and design. I learned pattern making, beading, how to cut and sew standard outfits, and how to properly use and maintain a sewing machine. The experience shape me to understand fashion beyond just passion. It made me appreciate the creativity, patience and hard work that goes into making a complete outfit.

My favorite outfit is this traditional wear. But then getting to Aba market with my sisters and my fiancé, it was not easy to settle for this lace colour which is ox blood and it has crystal beads in front both in ox blood and silver color, but then the prices were something else. it has a side design on the shoulder and a side gathering by the waist giving a redefined look and sophisticated fitting. It is a corset gown though originally made as a skirt and blouse that joined together at the waist making it a gown.

I am a dark skin girl and ox blood matches with my complexion, it gives this elegance and classic look, it makes my skin pops and brings out the shine.

On my head is an African asoeke popularly used for traditional events such as marriage, burial, naming ceremony and even to church and any traditional events. It compliments traditional wear and it is not to be paired with English wear. The color on my head is ox blood and I chose it because it compliments my look and adds warmth to my look. It is tied in a round form because as a person who has an oval face shape, a round gele fits my face most. Another detail to note is that it does not hide my well laid frontal and this helps position my forehead in the right spot.

I am also holding an ox blood clutch in my hand, a beautifully designed piece with a golden design and a fan with golden long beads, the word inscribed on my fan is “king Isabella” with golden letter words. My fan was made with an ox blood lace fabric and a cardboard as the base.

My umbrella was a design my designer and I carefully crafted out. It has a long robe with fringes and a lace covering at the top. My shoes are a pointed heel with a covered front and a heel suitable for walking. It is in ox blood.

I had to accessorize my look with a silver necklace that comes in a 3 in 1 and a round wrist bangle with a wrist watch because what is a hand without a watch.

The whole idea of this look was to maintain one color and accessorize it a silver accessories to complement and bring out the beauty of ox blood and silver.

Thank you for taking your time to read my post.
