Drawing a beautiful smiling portrait
Hello Steemians,
I hope everyone is having a wonderful day. Today, I am excited to share another portrait drawing project that I recently completed. As an artist, every portrait presents a unique opportunity to improve my skills and challenge myself in different areas such as shading, proportions, and facial expressions. For this drawing, I decided to create a beautiful portrait of a smiling young woman with long flowing hair. I knew from the beginning that if I could successfully capture that smile, the entire drawing would come alive. In this post, I will explain how I created the portrait from the initial sketch to the final details; stay tuned.
Drawing items
• A4 paper
• HB, 2B, 4B, and 6B pencils
• mechanical pencil
• charcoal pencil
• black pen
• eraser
• sharpener
Step-by-step process
Step 1
I began by refining the shape of the eyes and carefully darkened the pupils. The eyebrows were also adjusted to match the expression in the reference.
Step 2
Next I worked on the nose and lips. Since the portrait features a smile, I paid special attention to the curves around the mouth. Then, using my 2B and 4B pencils, I gradually added shadows to the face. I worked around the cheeks, chin, and jawline while keeping the highlights clean.
Step 3
Next was the hair. Using darker pencil grades, I established the deep shadows, while lighter strokes helped create highlights and movement. This process required patience, but it was also very rewarding because the hair added depth and elegance to the portrait.
Step 4
After completing the face and hair, I moved on to the clothing. Although the clothing was not the main focus of the portrait, I still added simple folds and shadows to create a balanced composition.
Step 5
In this final stage, I cleaned unnecessary sketch marks, adjusted the contrast, and added subtle highlights where needed. At this point, the portrait looked complete and balanced; below is my final result.
My selfie with my drawing
Looking at the completed portrait, I felt satisfied with the result. The combination of the smiling expression, detailed hair, and smooth shading came together beautifully. Although every artwork has areas that can be improved, I believe this piece reflects my continuous growth as an artist. Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to view my work. Have a great day, and see you in my next art post!
