Getting To Know Your Car Tyres
A car tyre is the rubber part of the vehicle that makes contact with the road. Sometimes the wheels are included, but for this post, only very little about the wheels would be considered.
A standard car tyre is made out of a combination of both natural and synthetic rubber, it also contains carbon, silica and steel rings serving as reinforcement.
The main function of the tyre is to handle traction and absorb shock which in someways affect fuel efficiency. Even tyre pressure plays a big role in how smooth or rough your ride feels.
All vehicles do not and can not use the same tyres, resulting in tyres having various form factors and specifications. The specification that describes the form factor of a car tyre is usually boldly written among the many inscriptions on the tyre.
The form factor code comes in this format P215/65R15
where:
P stands for P-matric which means the tyre is for a passenger vehicle. Other possible variables here are:
| P | Passenger vehicle |
|---|---|
| LT | Light Truck |
| ST | Special Trailer |
| T | Temporary |
215/65 describes the tyre's width over aspect ratio. The tyre's width is measured in millimetres. In this particular example, the surface that touches the ground for this our tyre is 215 mm wide. The height of the tyre frim floor to rim is 65% of 215 = 139.750
In this section you may have : 205/55, 225/45, 235/60, 245/40, and 255/50.
R describes the internal structure of the tyre. If you don't have an R here, you will be having a D or B
15 is a description of the wheel's rim size that it can fit on. The 15 here means 15" wheel diameter.
Other common rim diameters are 14" 16" 18" 20", and 22" on sportier or luxury models.
In case the tyre code you see has few additional values like P215/65R15 95H. The 95 indicates the maximum amount of load the tyre can support
H The h stands for the safe speed for the tyre.
Besides these, on the tyer, a lot closer to the rim. There is a 4-digit code that tells the tyre's manufacturer date. If you have (2523), it means the tyre was made on the 25th week in the year 2023, and counting six years from that date takes you to June 2029. That is the date when that tyre will be unfit for use. But Some authorities place it at 4 years after manufacture date.
It is also important to consider the tyre tread. There are specific treads that works best for rain, snow, and off-road driving conditions. I personally recommend asymmetric directional treads.
There are special tyers in the RFT category. These are the Run Flat Tyers designed to still operate for a while even after being punctured.
Conclusion
It take a lot of technical knowledge to select the right tyre for your car and at times, the right tyre changes with the seasons.
Some tyres are economically friendly, while some are designed to work well in different conditions. Make informed choices when selecting your tyers because it could mean your life.
