An Unforgettable Day at the National Martyrs' Memorial on the Great Victory Day

Today is December 16, 2025, the Great Victory Day. This day is a day of victory for the Bengali nation. For Bengalis, this is a very special day. The glorious memories of independence are intertwined with this day. After a long nine-month bloody war, Bengalis achieved independence on this day. The sacrificial memories of the martyrs are intertwined with this day. Therefore, this day is mixed with immense joy and sorrow.

This time, I had decided to spend Victory Day together with my friend Pritam. And accordingly, we went to the National Martyrs' Memorial. To avoid the morning crowd, we went to the National Martyrs' Memorial in the afternoon. But the festive atmosphere seemed to have intensified even more in the afternoon. Around 2 PM, we boarded the bus. There was a lot of traffic on the road because many people had gone to pay their respects since the morning. So it took us about an hour or a little more to reach from Uttara. By the time we arrived, many people had already paid their respects and left.

The National Martyrs' Memorial, or what is called in Bangla - Jatiya Sriti Soudh, is located in Savar, about 35 kilometers north-west of Dhaka. It is one of the most important national monuments in Bangladesh. It was built in memory of our freedom fighters who, through their sacrifices in 1971, liberated the country and created a new sovereign state named Bangladesh. The National Martyrs' Memorial was designed by the renowned architect Syed Mainul Hossain. After four years of construction work, it was inaugurated on December 16, 1982.

The most attractive part of the memorial is its seven pairs of triangular concrete walls. And these seven walls symbolize the seven important chapters of Bangladesh's independence. Looking at the National Martyrs' Memorial, it feels as if seven fingers are trying to touch the sky. It is a pillar of reverence.

Then we enjoyed the natural beauty around the memorial. Truly, this area is like a symbol of beauty. We enjoyed the silent roads surrounded by nature's beauty, the artificial lake, and so on. Then the afternoon turned into evening, and we left while chatting. On the way back, the time I spent today, especially these moments, became deeply etched as memories. This day is our day of pride. We should never forget the value of independence.
