Teacher Dies While Rescuing Students, Bustanul Ulum Senior High School and Junior High School Request Post-Flood Relocation

The flash floods that struck Bener Meriah Regency almost two months ago still left a devastating impact and deep sorrow, especially for the education sector. One of the schools severely affected was Bustanul Ulum Senior High School and Junior High School in Bener Meriah Regency, Aceh, Indonesia.

This was conveyed directly by the Principal of Bustanul Ulum Senior High School, Jailani, S.Ag, during a visit by the Acting Head of the Aceh Education Office, Murthalamuddin, MSP, and the Public Relations team on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.

In his statement, Jailani explained that the flash flood and landslide on November 26, 2025, caused severe damage to several school facilities. The school's location on the riverbank makes the buildings highly vulnerable to subsequent flooding and landslides.

"After the flood, several buildings were no longer usable. Our school is located on the riverbank, so we are very concerned about further flooding," said Jailani.

He mentioned that the student dormitory, classrooms, and school office buildings suffered serious cracks and were no longer suitable for use. Even the laboratory building behind the school had collapsed, as had the bridge connecting the residential area and the city, which was also affected.

"We can no longer use the boys' prayer room because the stairs collapsed and the steel was damaged. Likewise, the teachers' housing, library, principal's office, administration office, teachers' lounge, and three classrooms are all unusable," he explained sadly.

In addition to the damage to the buildings, the flash flood tragedy also claimed the life of one teacher, who died while trying to rescue students.

"We are deeply saddened. One of our teachers, the late Sandika, died around 3:00 a.m. He was trapped in the bathroom while trying to rescue students, until the building collapsed and he was swept away by the floodwaters," said Jailani.

Due to this situation, the school officially submitted a request for assistance to the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education of the Republic of Indonesia for assistance in the reconstruction and relocation of the school building that had been destroyed and could no longer be used.

"We sincerely hope that the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education of the Republic of Indonesia will assist us in the relocation and reconstruction of the Bustanul Ulum Integrated Senior High School (SMA) and Junior High School (SMPS) buildings. This will allow the educational process at our Islamic boarding school (dayah) to return to normal after this flash flood disaster," he said hopefully.

Acting Head of the Aceh Education Office, Murthalamuddin, revealed that his office has recorded the number of damaged schools throughout Aceh and is preparing a rehabilitation and reconstruction plan, including options for relocating schools that cannot be built on their original locations.[]
