🚨 Heat Stroke Can Kill Within Hours: Know the Warning Signs Before It's Too Late
A Public Health Awareness Post for This Summer
Assalam-o-Alaikum Steemians,
With temperatures rising across Pakistan, hospitals and emergency departments are seeing more patients affected by extreme heat. Many people use the terms Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke interchangeably, but they are not the same condition.
Knowing the difference can save a life.
☀️ What Is Heat Exhaustion?
Heat exhaustion occurs when the body loses excessive water and salts through sweating and can no longer cool itself effectively.
Common Symptoms
✅ Heavy sweating
✅ Excessive thirst
✅ Weakness and fatigue
✅ Dizziness
✅ Headache
✅ Nausea or vomiting
✅ Muscle cramps
At this stage, most people improve with rest, cooling, and proper hydration.
🚨 What Is Heat Stroke?
Heat stroke is the most severe form of heat-related illness and is a medical emergency.
The body's temperature rises dangerously high, potentially causing damage to the brain, heart, kidneys, and other vital organs.
Warning Signs
❌ Body temperature above 40°C (104°F)
❌ Confusion or altered mental status
❌ Difficulty speaking or understanding
❌ Loss of consciousness
❌ Seizures
❌ Rapid heartbeat
❌ Hot skin
Without immediate treatment, heat stroke can be fatal.
🆘 First Aid Everyone Should Know
For Heat Exhaustion

✔️ Give water or oral rehydration solution (ORS)
✔️ Loosen tight clothing
✔️ Allow the person to rest
For Heat Stroke
✔️ Call emergency medical services immediately
✔️ Move the person to a cool place
✔️ Apply ice packs to the neck, armpits, and groin
✔️ Remove excess clothing
✔️ Do not give anything by mouth if the person is unconscious
👨⚕️ Doctor's Message
Heat stroke should never be dismissed as "just feeling hot." Children, older adults, outdoor workers, and people with chronic illnesses are particularly vulnerable during heat waves.
Stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, and seek immediate medical attention if someone develops confusion, collapse, or signs of heat stroke.
A few minutes of awareness can prevent a tragedy.
