Pencil drawing tutorial - capturing a child's sadness
Hello everyone.
Greetings to you all and it's a pleasure writing in this community, Today, I’m happy to share another one of my pencil portrait with you all. This time, I decided to draw the face of a sad child. I was inspired by how children express emotions so purely. They may not say much, but their eyes always speak. I didn’t just want to draw a child’s face; I wanted to capture that silent emotion children often carry—an expression that says a lot without a single word. Below are the steps in creating this drawing and I hope you all like it.
DRAWING ITEMS
• A4 paper
• graphite pencil
• HB pencil
• 4B pencil
• charcoal pencil
• eraser
• sharpener
step 1
I began with the eyes; I believe eyes are the strongest part of any portrait, especially when emotion is involved. I darkened the pupils carefully, adding depth while leaving small highlights to keep them expressive. Around the eyes, I applied gentle shading to suggest sadness and emotional weight without exaggeration.
step 2
After getting the eyes, I then moved on drawing the nose and mouth. The nose was drawn using shading and minimal lines while the lips was slightly open, showing a tense and uneasy expression. I took my time here because even a small mistake could change the entire mood of the portrait.
step 3
The next step here was the hair, using loose and flowing pencil strokes I drew the hair making it look lose and free capturing the pure hairstyle of a child.
step 4
Next I used variations of pencil to shade and draw the shoulder. The shading around the cheeks and jawline was done gradually, building layers to create a smooth transition between light and shadow.
step 5
Then finally, after i completed the essential part of the drawing process, I took my time to go through the entire drawing again, making few adjustments and adding contrast where necessary, as this step made the drawing more bold and realistic. Below is the final result.

Wow @emmaboy23, your portrait of this child showing sad expressions is amazing . I love your work 😍 you drew it very well, especially the lips of this child are so realistic because children make the same face when they are sad or about to cry.
Do you know that if you hadn't shown your face and the step by step guide on how to draw this, I would say it's an AI? The drawing is so neat and I wish I can draw like you.
