SLC32-W1 || Real Life Problem Solving Challenge: Save Electricity At Home
I also believe that saving energy in my house is the ethical and economic thing to do. I have learned about saving energy by figuring out what appliances consume more energy in my house. Here are some of the thing that I do to save electricity:
My top two most power consuming electrical appliances are my refrigerator and my electrical iron.
One huge energy drain is my refrigerator as it needs to be powered on and operating 24/7, all day and all night. Constant power draw for the compressor is required to keep the inside cold.
On the other hand, my electrical iron, although for short periods, takes up the most wattage. It needs to draw large amounts of electrical power and convert it into thermal energy for the heated part to function, allowing it to heat up fast to smooth clothes.
Two Practical Habits I Practice for Energy saving
As a solution to the high energy consumption above, I apply two rigid methods:
- Unplug idle electronics: All appliances, like chargers, electrical iron, TV , are unplugged from their electrical sockets once it has finished its duty. This eliminates 'vampire draw' or 'stand-by power' drawn from the socket.

2.Bulk Ironing: Rather than heating up the electrical iron daily to iron single outfits, I try to gather all my clothes so that I have only one major ironing session weekly. This saves the iron from wasting electricity through repeated heating from cold.
Have the two methods you use to reduce electricity.
Yes. I definitely see that there is an improvement on my electricity bill due to the two methods applied above. Bulk Ironing made sure that the electrical iron consumes massive wattage in a relatively smaller period of time on the overall for the week. Taking into account, switching off idle appliances has also removed 'hidden costs'. These are the key points leading to a decreased electricity bill.
Simplest energy saving habit of mine
My easiest habit to stick to would definitely be switching off lights and fans once I step out of any room. No need to do much, just a quick check while I walk out. Making sure the room is dark and silent once it is empty is becoming a reflex to me.
. My suggestion to save energy
My recommendation for others who would like to save on their electricity bill would be to always start by observing behaviors. Audit your current daily activities and remove them, for example; switch off the appliance from a switch board rather than from standby, etc. Also, utilize the free sunlight during the day in the afternoon so as to switch off the lights or bulb. These simple daily actions accumulate to enormous cost savings.
