_WHEN SOMEONE YOU LOVE BECOMES A MEMORY, THAT MEMORY BECOMES A TREASURE.
In this week, #67 of the One Picture And One Story Contest, I want to share a story of my uncle's burial and death. Mr Ita Edet was a handsome young man from Ifa Ikot Obong, uyo, AKWA IBOM STATE; he was dark in complexion. His was a carpenter by profession, married to my aunty, Ima-Obong Effiong, from the family of Effiong Udobang, in Ifa ikot Akpan, uyo, AKWA IBOM STATE; she is fair and beautiful and a hairdresser. Their family was blessed with 5 children, 4 boys and a girl.
Mr Ita Edet was hard-working and devoted; since he was from a poor background, he needed to work hard to get what he needed and also to meet the family's needs and desires. He wasn't wealthy, but he never lacked; everything went so well for years until sickness turned everything around.
As I said, my uncle was a carpenter, he made different things out of wood, for example, chairs, benches, beds, and lots more, but among all this, he specialized in making house roofs, he didn't have a workshop for making other things I mentioned unless the person in need of them bring their material then he made what the want, so he was really into making house roofs.
However, as a carpenter specialized in such duty, he was exposed to the sun, which also contributed to making his complexion dark; he also experienced other side effects such as eye pain, nausea, headache, and dizziness. He didn't pay attention to any of these as they were just a temporary situation when he was back from work; just taking his bath and having a nap made him feel new the next day, so he didn't bother about that, not knowing the worse was about to happen.
THE SICKNESS |
|---|
It was on a faithful Monday when my aunt called my dad to come over to their place, saying his husband ( Mr. Ita Edet) was feeling very sick and that he couldn't get up from bed. Arriving there, my aunt was weeping. We tried to make our uncle at least get up and be seated, but he couldn't; he didn't even say a word to us but was breathing heavily, with his eyes full of a watering substance; we couldn't know if he was crying. We rushed him to the nearest hospital, where he was admitted; according to the doctor who ran a check-up on him, I was told that my uncle had a hypertensive Retinopathy.
All this while our uncle was suffering from hypertension, which also affected his vision; it was then I realized that my uncle wasn't crying, but it was because of the sickness that made his eye look like that. With the help of the doctor, my uncle was feeling better after some days but was having problems seeing things clearly, although his vision wasn't damaged. My uncle spent a couple of weeks at the hospital and was ready to go back home, not knowing he wouldn't.
THE UNEXPECTEDLY DEATH |
|---|
Honestly, I wasn't expecting to hear any bad news from my uncle, as his health was okay the last time we called to check on him. I was expecting to see him walking back home in good health but unfortunately, he wasn't, instead, my aunt was crying shedding tears all over her face, Without even asking I knew my uncle was gone, I felt weak all of a sudden, just like that, my uncle is gone, noo I don't believe this, I said to myself, but I had to believe it because it's was the sad truth, my uncle has gone. After some months, my uncle's burial was conducted on Saturday, 14 September 2024. MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE.
After my uncle's death, things haven't been the same with his family; sorrow and sadness fill their hearts, bringing a lot of painful memories. Seeing things like this makes me eager for God's kingdom; with all the numerous promises he made to us, I am looking forward to the time when death will be no more and when the dead ones will resurrect; I can't imagine how I'll feel seeing my uncle again.
As I reflect on the life and legacy of my uncle (Mr. Ita Edet), I am reminded of the peaceful and calming presence of death, the following poem captures the essence of this feeling, and I hope it brings comfort to those who are grieving their loved ones.
A PEACEFUL END TO LIFE'S TURBULENT ROLE,
THE HEART, NOW STILL, NO LONGER BEAT,
A SILENCE FALLS, WHERE LOVE AND LAUGHTER MEET.
IN THE DARKNESS, LIGHT A FINAL STAND,
A FLEETING GLANCE, AT LIFE'S FRAGILE HAND,
MEMORIES LINGER, LIKE AUTUMN'S LEAVES,
ECHO OF LOVE, IN DEATH QUITE A BREEZE.
THE JOURNEY ENDS, THE PATH NOW CLEARED,
A SOUL SET FREE, FROM LIFE'S JOY AND FEAR,
In DEATH'S EMBRACE, WE FIND OUR WAY,
TO ETERNAL PEACE, AT THE END OF THE DAY.
My humble invite goes to these three friends of mine
