When Goodbye Felt Too Heavy

Here I am again, writing about something that happened just yesterday—honestly, it’s still fresh in my mind. Yesterday was my last day at work, and wow, it turned out to be one of those moments I’m never going to forget.

We’ve got this tradition at the office. On someone’s last day, everyone gathers in one spot. People—friends, colleagues, even the heads of each department—take turns sharing stories about the person who’s leaving. I knew how it usually went, but sitting there, waiting for them to talk about me, I couldn’t help feeling nervous. I kept wondering what they’d say. Part of me expected the usual stuff, but there’s something about hearing people share their memories and experiences with you that just hits different.

That whole day just felt heavy. I couldn’t concentrate on anything, not with the thought of it being my last day at work hanging over me. When everyone gathered, my mind just went totally blank after hearing what they had to say.

There was one co-worker I was especially close with. She’s the one who really got to me—I actually started tearing up when she spoke, even though she was just sharing a story with me.

Honestly, I couldn’t help it. I got choked up for a bit, because all of it was real, and it just hit me. Still, I tried to keep it together, you know? I kept reminding myself I had to look steady—after all, I’m a guy, and guys aren’t supposed to show too much emotion, especially in front of a bunch of people watching.

Honestly, their speech didn’t leave me untouched. Working at this company was worth it. I made real connections, shared plenty of laughs with my coworkers, and picked up a lot along the way.
