Real Life Problem Solving Challenge: Save Electricity At Home

In modern life, electricity is such an essential part of our daily life that we cannot imagine a moment without it. But in the present time, electricity wastage and the increasing electricity bill every month have become a big concern for middle-class families like us. At the same time, saving electricity is also our civic responsibility in this time of ongoing energy crisis in the country. Through this wonderful competition, I will share with you some practical experiences and strategies for saving electricity in my own home.

Save Electricity At Home

What are two electrical appliances in your home that use a lot of electricity? Explain with original pictures.

Looking at the electricity bill for my home, I noticed that two devices consume the most electricity. These are detailed below:

  • Refrigerator: The refrigerator is an essential appliance in our family. It is used to keep raw produce, fish and meat, and cooked food fresh. Although we can turn off all other devices when needed, the refrigerator is an appliance that has to be kept running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. To maintain the temperature inside the refrigerator, its compressor automatically turns on and off repeatedly, which takes up a large part of the total electricity consumption of our house. Especially on hot days, when the refrigerator door is opened repeatedly, its electricity consumption increases even more.

  • Water Heater Kettle (Electric Kettle): We use an electric kettle regularly in our house every morning and evening to make tea and coffee, and for instant hot water. Also, my daughter has to use this electric kettle every day to heat water while taking a bath. Although this appliance can heat water very quickly, it is a high-wattage (usually 1500 watts) device. While it is running, it draws a lot of electricity in a very short time. Since we use this kettle several times a day, it has a big impact on our monthly electricity bill.

What two methods do you use to reduce electricity consumption? Show at least one practical method with a selfie.

To prevent electricity waste in our home and keep the electricity bill under control, I have taken several effective steps in my home. Among them, the two main methods are mentioned below:

Method 1:

Making and using an alternative fan with a 12-volt (12V) DC motor:
In our country, the prepaid meter money is quickly exhausted due to the continuous operation of ceiling fans or stand fans during the hot season. To reduce this cost, I have created a wonderful practical solution with my own intelligence. I have made a custom fan using a 12-volt DC motor and small fan blades, which provides excellent air with very little electricity with the help of a small 12-volt battery or adapter. Where a normal AC fan consumes about 70-80 watts of electricity, this DC fan I have made runs on only 10-15 watts of power. I use this economical fan by turning off the big fan while working at the table or sleeping at night, which has reduced the electricity consumption of my home to a great extent.

Keep windows open during the day and make maximum use of natural light: This is a very simple but very effective method. In our house, no lights or fans are turned on during the day unless necessary. I open all the windows in the house as soon as I wake up in the morning. This allows a lot of natural light to enter the house from outside, which eliminates the darkness inside the house and eliminates the need for artificial lights. At the same time, having the windows open allows sufficient air to circulate inside the house (cross ventilation), which keeps the house naturally cool and also reduces the use of fans a lot. This habit is playing a big role in reducing our daily electricity bill.

Have the two methods you use to reduce electricity consumption resulted in a reduction in your electricity bill or not? Explain

Yes, Alhamdulillah! I am very happy to confirm that these two methods I have taken have proven to be 100% effective in significantly reducing our home electricity bill. This is not a fictional matter, but I have found real proof of this from the recharge of the meter or the bill receipt every month.
Earlier, when we were not aware of these small things, due to the continuous operation of the AC line, ceiling fan, and stand fan day and night in the intense heat and the habit of keeping the lights on in the house even during the day, our prepaid meter money would run out very quickly. Every month, a large amount of money goes into the electricity bill alone. But ever since I made the 12-volt DC motor fan and started it for personal use and fully implemented the rule of using natural light and air by opening all the windows of the house during the day, the meter wheel has started turning at a slow speed.

Real Changes:
  • Saving money: Earlier, where I had to recharge a certain amount of money every month, now, due to these two habits, our monthly electricity consumption has reduced by about 15% to 20%.
  • Backup in meter: Earlier, the money recharged in the prepaid meter used to last for 20-22 days; now the same amount easily lasts for the whole month.

Small rechargeable fan for saving electricity

In particular, the pressure on our main line has been reduced a lot as the 12-volt DC fan consumes only a few watts of electricity. And since the lights and fans in the house are completely turned off during the day, we do not waste any extra electricity for about 10-12 hours a day. So I can definitely say that these two practical methods of mine are not only saving our hard-earned money, but have also accustomed us to a frugal and conscious lifestyle.

What is the easiest habit for you to save electricity?

In my opinion, the simplest and most effective habit to save electricity is - Turning off lights and fans when leaving the room when not needed and making the most of daylight. This is a habit that does not require any additional technology; just a little awareness is enough. Now, during the day, our windows are kept open so that enough natural light and air can enter. As a result, there is no need to turn on artificial lights or fans for a large part of the day. This simple habit is now followed by everyone in our family.

What advice would you give to others to save electricity so that they can reduce their electricity bill and save money?

I have some practical suggestions for everyone, which I hope anyone can follow to significantly reduce their household electricity bills:

  • Use LED bulbs: Replace your old filament or CFL bulbs with good-quality energy-saving LED bulbs. They provide a lot of light at very low wattage.
  • Buy inverter technology devices: When buying a new refrigerator, AC, or washing machine, definitely look for 'Inverter Technology' and Energy Star rating. These save about 30-50% electricity compared to ordinary devices.
  • Use irons and heavy appliances at once: While ironing clothes, try to iron all the clothes for the week at once, instead of doing it little by little every day. Because most electricity is consumed by heating the iron.
  • Family awareness: Explain the importance of saving electricity to everyone in the family, young and old, so that they also do not keep any lights, fans, or ACs on unnecessarily. I am hopeful that your small conscious step will not only save your hard-earned money but also play a big role in addressing the country's energy crisis.

Conclusion

Finally, I would like to say that saving electricity does not only mean saving money in our own pockets, but also ensuring the proper use of our country's limited state resources. Our small conscious habits can bring about a big change. Let us all come forward to prevent electricity waste from our respective places and build an eco-friendly and economical future.
