SCS32-W5 | Real-Life Problem Solving Challenge: Study Techniques
What study technique do you often use, and how effective is it?
Observing, thinking, writing down, reading, and memorising are the techniques that I often use. This technique has helped me to get my priorities in order, especially when I am overstressed at work.
At my place of work, things have not been easy for me because I face challenges every day that I try my best to solve. My work mostly involves recording sales and inventories in my company's Excel spreadsheet, which I am usually overstressed and sometimes confused.
What I do most of the time is to observe some situations, think about them, and how I can solve them, then write down the possible solutions in solving them. Like in my image, I was recording information in the company spreadsheet, which at the same time I was observing and reading about Excel formulas, how to key in figures, analyse data, and a lot more. To this, I used tools such as: notebook, Google, ChatGPT, and calculator.
What is the biggest distraction that affects your studies, and how do you control it?
The biggest distraction that affects my studies is when I am reading or busy with work, and someone starts talking to me. That is when someone started gisting with me, and when the environment became noisy. A noisy environment distracts me from being focused on my studies, or talking around.
How I control it is that whenever I am studying, and I start hearing noise or gist by my friends or people around, I stop studying and also turn off my notifications, data, and put my phone on Don't disturbs me DND mode.
What is one good habit that helps you improve your academic performance?
The good habits that help me to improve my academic performance and understanding are consistency in reading and memorising what I have read. As a student, what helps me most is memorising, which most people see as cramming to pass an examination. If I should read without memorising it, I find it difficult to understand it and do well in my academic performance.
Once I read a particular topic today, and memorise it two to three times, I will understand it better, and it will forever remain in my brain, which is exactly what I do to improve my academic performance.
Explain any digital tools, apps, or resources that you commonly use for study?
I make use of the following digital tools and apps for study.
- Google: I make use of Google for research and searching for things online, which has been helpful to me.
- ChatGPT: I make use of ChatGPT for deep study and understanding, for further improvement, accurate information, and communication, where I get to interact with ChatGPT by asking questions as if I am in a classroom asking my lecturer.
- YouTube: I also make use of YouTube, where I get to watch videos explaining practically from online experts.
- Notepad/Microsoft Word: I use these tools for typing before printing out what I have typed. Sometimes I do use MS Word for typing also which thereafter I convert my work into a portable reading file (PDF).
What advice would you give to students who struggle with anxiety and depression during their studies?
My advice to students who struggle with anxiety and depression during their studies is the following advice.
Don't overstress yourself trying to read when you're already exhausted.
Read at the moment that you feel that you will understand, and when your mind is calm.
Have a notebook or jotter to write down key points and memorise them later
Don't wait for a month or a week to examination before you start reading, as starting early is the best.

You made a very valid point about studying in a calm and distraction-free environment. I especially like your habit of observing, thinking, writing down solutions, and then applying what you've learned. Using tools like ChatGPT, Google, and YouTube alongside practical work in Excel is a smart way to strengthen your knowledge. Your advice to start reading early instead of waiting until exams is also excellent because consistent study reduces stress and improves understanding. Thanks for sharing these practical study techniques—they can inspire many students to develop better learning habits.
