The Effects of Screen Time on Children’s Mental Health, Sleep Patterns, and Social Behavior
The screen usage is already a routine of children. Numerous children are spending time on phones, tablets, televisions, and computers. Although technology can be useful both in learning and entertainment, excessive exposure to the screen can also be detrimental to the mental and sleep habits, as well as to social development in children. I think that this is a critical concern which parents and the society should take note of particularly since technology is ever expanding.
To start with, screen time may have a lot of influence on the mental health of children. Children spend excessive time on the internet which can lead to the child being more apprehensive, tense and even depressed. Children can be compared to others by use of social media, especially, resulting to low self-esteem.
I have observed that the constantly online kids seem to be dissatisfied when they do not receive enough likes or attention. Moreover, children may lose control and become incapable of concentrating or calming down as a result of being subjected to fast-moving content all the time. Excessive screen time instead of calming the minds of those who are watching it may cause them to feel overwhelmed and restless.
One more significant impact of screen time is on the sleeping patterns of children. Sleep is highly essential in the growth and development of the child. But in cases where children take screens at night, the screens may disrupt sleep. The screens light has the capacity of influencing the brain and causing difficulty in falling asleep.
I have observed how many children spend hours watching videos or playing games and this makes their sleep poor. Consequently, they can end up getting up tired, weak and incapable of concentrating at school. Their sleeping can also lead to poor sleep which influences the mood such that they are more irritable and less active during the day.
Moreover, the too much screen time may affect the social behavior of children. Children do not acquire social skills by not playing with others, talking to them or sharing. They can not communicate well when they spend more time on screens than a human being. In my opinion, a face-to-face communication is considered to be extremely significant to establish good relationships. Children who use the devices continuously are likely to be shyness, withdrawn, and less interested in actual conversations. It might also be difficult that they learn how to feel as they are not exercising the skills in real life.
Besides, excessive time with the screen may lower the level of physical activity, which has close connections with social and mental health. Children are not likely to play outdoor or to sport when they are constantly attached to a device. This may result in ill health and even loss of confidence.
I believe that children require a balance between the screen time and physical activities to develop physically and emotionally. Outdoor games also provide children with an opportunity to have friends and learn to work in teams.
It should be noted though, that not every screen time is evil. Children can find educational programs, learning application, and video calls very useful. To my mind, screens are not the main problem, but the way in which they are utilized.
The controlled and meaningful use of screens by children can bring them knowledge and help them acquire effective skills. The issue arises when the time spent on the screen is beyond reasonable and socializing, studying, and sleeping are lost to it.
Parents and guardians can play a key role in order to minimize the negative impacts of screen time. Restricting screen time, particularly at bedtime may be used to enhance the sleep of children. Mental and social development of children can also be encouraged by encouraging them to participate in outdoor activities, hobbies and family interactions. I believe adults also should be ready to set an example as children tend to follow what they observe. Children tend to spend time well on their screens when the parents do so.
Conclusively, as much as technology plays a significant role in contemporary life, excessive screen time may negatively affect the psychological wellbeing of children, affect their sleep as well as the ability to socialise. In my opinion, the most significant solution is balance. Regulating the screen usage of children with the help of appropriate guidance and promoting healthy lifestyles will enable us to transform children into well-balanced and joyful individuals.
