The African star apple fruit(udara) season has always been a special time for the people in the rural area. It is further taken to the urban area where it is displayed in the markets. Whenever this bright orange fruits are displayed in markets and along the roadside , it is known that nature has brought one of the sweetest seasonal fruit blessings again.
Udara has never been taken as an ordinary fruit; it is part of our childhood memories, family moments, and village life. As children, we looked forward to this season with excitement, knowing that once the fruits ripened, we would gather around to enjoy their rich taste together.
Udara is round in shape and slightly bigger than a tennis ball. There are still some that are so small just like the tennis ball. The most outer skin is smooth, firm, and usually has orange or yellowish when they are ripe. When they are cut open, the inside has soft, juicy pulp divided into parts. The pulp is sticky and shiny, surrounding dark brown seeds. The taste of udara is uniquely sweet, with a slight tanginess that makes it refreshing. Some fruits are extremely sweet, while others are not but, have a mild sour touch. Overall, it leaves a pleasant flavor in the mouth that makes you want more.
The agricultural or botanical terms, the name of udara is Chrysophyllum albidum. It is also commonly called African star apple. The tree grows well in tropical regions, especially in West Africa. It thrives during the dry season, which is why it becomes widely available around this time of the year.
Udara is not just sweet; it also carries many health benefits. Health experts informs that it is rich in vitamin C, which helps to boost the immune system and protect the body against infections. It contains antioxidants that help fight free radicals in the body. The fruit also aids digestion because of its fiber content. Some people believe it helps in controlling blood sugar levels and supports heart health. The seeds and bark are even used in traditional medicine in some communities.
The udara fruit is a seasonal treasure that brings joy, nourishment, and health benefits. For us in the South Eastern part of Nigeria, it represents culture, togetherness, and the goodness of nature. Each season reminds us to appreciate simple, natural blessings like this wonderful fruit.
