Hello Teaching Team

Hello My Steemain Friends ,

Today I am writing about an interesting Steemit Engagement Challenge S30- W4: which is all time my favourite topic ""Family Bonding Activities" this amazing challenge organised by @ngoenyi

Your family should choose one activity from the ones listed above and mention it to us and why this particular one was chosen

For our family activity, I have chosen "Storytelling." My primary reason for selecting storytelling is to use narratives as a medium to inform my children about the various events and dynamics occurring within society. This is because when we convey a message through a story, it resonates deeply and effectively with a child's mind; consequently, the specific lessons I wish to impart are absorbed much more easily through this method.

As children grow up, the time eventually comes when we must let go of their hands and allow them to navigate society on their own. Every parent strives to prepare their children to face the world independently; therefore, I believe storytelling serves as an excellent medium for helping children understand both the virtues and the vices—the dual perspectives—of society.

I always maintain a relationship with my children that is akin to that of a friend. I discuss everything with them—especially those matters that are crucial for them to understand at their specific age. After all, if we don't tell them, who will? So, I told my children a story about how coming first in class—or consistently excelling—is indeed a wonderful thing. Working hard in one's studies to earn praise and recognition is something that every parent desires for their child, and every child desires for themselves. However, one must never let this success breed arrogance. For when a person succumbs to arrogance, they inevitably come crashing back down to earth.

The Story

There once lived a tortoise and a hare. The hare was incredibly fast and agile, whereas the tortoise, due to his heavy body, moved very slowly. Consequently, both the tortoise and the hare decided to participate in a running race competition. They both began to run. The tortoise, hindered by his heavy frame, could only move at a sluggish pace, while the hare—thanks to his nimble body—sprinted far ahead. When the hare looked back and saw that the tortoise was still a great distance behind, he thought to himself: "By the time he finally catches up, I will have moved even further ahead."

"I could leave him in the dust in the blink of an eye!"—thinking this, the hare lay down beneath a tree and fell asleep. Meanwhile, the tortoise, moving slowly but steadily, continued his journey toward the finish line. The rabbit was sleeping carefree, his head filled with arrogance. He gave no thought whatsoever to the fact that he needed to win first; blinded by this very arrogance, he continued to sleep. Meanwhile, the tortoise—moving slowly but steadily—reached his destination and won the race. When the rabbit finally woke up, he saw that the tortoise had already been declared the winner. The rabbit felt deeply embarrassed and angry at himself. At that moment, an elder wisely remarked to him, "Arrogance had gone to your head. That is why you fell asleep before securing your victory; and in doing so, your fortune, too, fell asleep."

Message

The message we derive from this story is that one should never underestimate anyone, nor should one harbor arrogance. Sometimes, a seemingly weaker individual can achieve feats that even a strong person cannot; therefore, one must always continue to work hard.

I had heard this story previously, so it cost me absolutely nothing to share it. However, I did make a point of showing the children a video version of it on my mobile phone. This is because when we narrate a story and simultaneously present it in a dramatic or visual format, children tend to grasp and understand it much more effectively.

What are the challenges of getting everyone together to do it and how did you overcome those challenges

I did not face any significant challenges while carrying out this activity. Since the children are currently on school break—with only two to four days remaining until school reopens—I make sure to sit down with them for a chat whenever both they and I find the time. We engage in conversation regularly, and whenever I come across something new or interesting—whether through my mobile phone or by hearing it from someone in the community—I invariably share it with the children. After all, this is precisely how we help prepare children to navigate the social world.

I specifically chose a story that would be easily understood by both of my children, given that there is a three-to-five-year age gap between them. Since my children are currently focused on their studies, the story I shared with them emphasized the importance of avoiding arrogance, working hard consistently, and never looking down on anyone. Therefore, whenever I narrate a story, I make a conscious effort to use words that children can grasp easily. Furthermore, I choose my vocabulary in such a way that only the intended message reaches them, while shielding them from any negativity present in society. For it is precisely in this manner that we can overcome life's challenges.

What are the gains and who truly enjoyed this chosen activity the most

Naturally, the benefits of this story will accrue to both of my children—and rightly so; indeed, that is precisely why I shared it with them. While a single word spoken on a single day may not yield immediate results, if you consistently reinforce those same lessons, they will inevitably take effect sooner or later. Eventually, they will firmly take root within the children's minds. This is the task that every parent must undertake: to cultivate goodness within their children's minds and to lay a strong foundation of good values. For when the foundation is robust and sound, the fruits it bears will be equally excellent, and my children's personalities will develop into something truly remarkable.

We all derived great joy from listening to this story—my children found delight in the act of listening, while I found joy in knowing that the very lesson I wished to impart had successfully reached them. Since the story had a tangible impact on the children, the objective behind my storytelling has been fully realized.
