The Quiet Spaces Between Us

in Steem Kids & Parents3 days ago

In the town of Maple Grove there lived eight people. Their lives were connected by a truth that nobody knew about. There was Ethan, a twelve-year- boy who was very quiet. He had a sister named Lily. Their parents were David and Grace. Ethan's best friend was Noah. His teacher was Mrs. Carter and the school counselor was Mr. Adams. They also had a neighbor named Mrs. Rose.

Ethan seemed like a kid to everyone. He went to school every day. Did his homework. He did not cause any trouble so his parents were happy with him.

David would say to Ethan "You do not give us any problems."

Grace would gently pat Ethans shoulder. Then go make dinner.

But every time they said something to him Ethan felt bad.

He had worries that he did not tell anyone about.

At school some older kids made fun of the way Ethan talked. They would laugh when he answered questions in class. They even hid his books during break time. Ethan did not fight back. He just. Said everything was fine.

Ethan was scared that his parents would be upset if they knew what was happening.

His dad, David worked every day to give the family a better life. His mom, Grace had a job. Took care of Lily and the house. Ethan thought his problems were not important compared to what his parents were doing.

So Ethan did not say anything.

His friend Noah noticed that something was wrong.

"Noah said, "You do not laugh anymore."

Ethan said, "I am just tired."

Noah said, "You have been tired for months."

Ethan smiled again. It was not a real smile.

Noah knew that Ethan was not okay.

Ethans grades started to get worse. He stopped playing football after school. He would stay in his room. Pretend to study but really he was just thinking about why he felt so alone.

Lily would knock on his door. Say, "Want to play?"

Ethan would say, " later."

Later never came.

Mrs. Carter, Ethans teacher noticed that something was different. Ethan used to be a kid but now he was very quiet. He would stare out the window during class.

After class Mrs. Carter asked him "Is everything alright?"

Ethan said, "Yes, ma'am."

Mrs. Carter asked again "Are you sure?"

Ethan said, "I am just sleepy."

Mrs. Carter knew that there was more to it.

She talked to Mr. Adams, the school counselor, about Ethan.

"I think Ethan is carrying something he does not know how to share " she said.

Mr. Adams agreed to watch Ethan for a weeks.

At home David and Grace did not know what was going on.

One evening David told a friend "Our son never complains. He is strong."

Mrs. Rose, their neighbor heard what David said.

She. Said, "The quiet kids often have the biggest problems."

David did not really understand what she meant.

A week later Noah found Ethan sitting behind the school library.

Noah said, "I know something is wrong."

Ethan finally told Noah what was happening.

"They keep bullying me " he said.

"They say I am weak. They hide my books. They laugh at me every day."

Noahs eyes got wide with surprise.

Noah told Ethan to go talk to Mr. Adams.

Mr. Adams listened to Ethan without interrupting.

When Ethan finished talking he started to cry.

Mr. Adams said, "Being brave does not mean you have to carry every problem by yourself."

Mr. Adams asked David and Grace to come to school.

They thought they were going to talk about Ethans grades. They learned about the bullying instead.

Grace was shocked.

David looked at Ethan with tears in his eyes.

"Why did you not tell us?" he asked.

Ethan looked down. Said, "I did not want to make life harder for you."

The room was quiet for a moment.

David realized that he had thought Ethan was happy just because he was quiet.

Grace realized that she had been asking Ethan about his homework. Not about how he was feeling.

For the time in months Ethan cried in front of his parents.

They hugged him. Said, "We are sorry."

"We thought giving you everything you needed meant you were okay " they said.

Mr. Adams explained, "Kids often hide their pain because they do not want to disappoint their parents. They need attention not to be watched."

David and Grace learned a lot from what Mr. Adams said.

Things started to change away.

The school did something about the bullying and Ethan felt safe again.

At home they started doing things

They would turn off their phones during dinner. Talk to each other.

Every evening they would ask Ethan about his day.

David would ask, "What made you smile today?"

Grace would ask, "Did anything make you feel worried?"

Sometimes Ethan would answer away and sometimes he would take a few minutes.

His parents would wait patiently for him to answer.

Lily loved these evenings.

She would tell stories about school and soon they were all laughing again.

Mrs. Rose would watch them from across the street. Smile.

Their house seemed happier.

One afternoon Ethan and David played football together.

Ethan said, "I missed spending time with you."

David stopped the ball. Said, "I thought working harder was the best way to love you."

Ethan said, "It helps, but being here with me helps more."

Those simple words changed David forever.

Months later Ethan was a kid.

He was confident again. He was smiling.

He was playing football with his friends during recess.

Importantly he knew that he did not have to face his problems alone.

At the schools meeting David told the other parents what he had learned.

"I thought that if my kids were not complaining everything was fine " he said.

"I was wrong. Kids sometimes hide their pain because they do not want to worry us. We have to listen to them even when they're quiet."

The room was quiet as the parents thought about what David said.

Mrs. Carter. Mr. Adams nodded in agreement.

Noah grinned at Ethan from across the hall.

Lily held Ethans hand.

That evening as they walked home Ethan realized something

Love is not about giving kids food, clothes and education.

It is about being for them listening to them and making them feel safe.

David and Grace learned that when parents are close, to their kids listen to them and are kind their kids do not have to face their problems alone.
