Hello, great Steemians! 👋

How are you all, and I hope everything is going well. It is always a pleasure to participate in creative contests that allow us to express ourselves freely, and this week’s theme truly inspired me to pick up my pencil once again. For this week’s contest, organized by @mesola, I decided to challenge myself with a portrait that leans heavily on expression, lighting, and texture. The result is the pencil drawing above—a detailed portrait of a man whose expression feels both calm and thoughtful. Here's how I made this piece.

Drawing materials

• A4 paper

• graphite pencil

• charcoal pencil

• mechanical pencil

• 3B, 4B, and 6B pencils

Drawing process

Step 1

First I began by drawing the eyes. The eyes were my main priority, as they often determine the mood of the entire piece. I worked gradually, adding layers of graphite while preserving highlights to create a natural shine. The eyebrows were shaped with short, deliberate strokes to mimic real hair texture.

Step 2

After doing that, I then went ahead to focus on the beard and the shading of the face. I started shading lightly, then gradually increased the pressure in darker areas. Focus on regions like the side of the nose, under the cheekbones, and beneath the chin.

Step 3

Here I drew the hair. This part required a lot of patience and control. Rather than shading randomly, I followed the natural direction of hair growth, building volume through repeated strokes.

Step 4

Next was the neck; I carefully used my 3B and 6B pencils and shaded it carefully. Then I added the clothing and I also added a shaded background on the darker side. This simple technique helps separate the subject from the paper and draws attention to the face.

Step 5

Then lastly, I refine the clothing with minimal detail so it doesn’t distract from the face. Clean up unnecessary lines using an eraser and adjust highlights where needed.
