Pencil portrait drawing || creating a portrait of bossj23
Hello amazing Steemians,
Welcome back to my art blog. Today I am excited to share another pencil portrait drawing tutorial with you all. Every drawing session feels like a personal adventure for me because it allows me to express creativity in the simplest but most meaningful way. Today, I am happy to share my latest pencil portrait drawing of fellow Steemian @bossj23, a piece I truly enjoyed creating from start to finish. The reference photo had a calm and confident appearance, especially with the formal outfit and facial expression. The pose, especially the hand adjusting the tie, gave the portrait a classy and confident look that I wanted to capture on paper. Below are the steps I took in creating this drawing.

Drawing materials
• A4 paper
• mechanical pencil
• graphite pencil
• 4B and 6B pencil
• charcoal pencil
• black pen
• eraser
• blending tissue
• sharpener
Step-by-step process
Step 1
First, I began working on the eyes, eyebrows, nose, and lips. These details are very important in portrait drawing because they determine the expression and likeness of the person. I paid extra attention to the eyes because I wanted them to appear calm and realistic. I used soft pencil strokes and gentle shading around the eyelids to create depth.
Step 2
Next I focused on drawing the lips, and I slowly added shading across the face using smooth pencil movements. I blended lighter and darker tones together to create a natural skin texture. The beard area was created using small pencil strokes to give it a realistic appearance.
Step 3
After doing that, I then completed the shading and added the hair. Drawing the hand was another challenge for me because hands can easily look awkward if the proportions are not correct. I erased and adjusted some parts several times until I achieved a better shape.
Step 4
Next was the suit. The suit was another interesting section to draw. The dark tones of the jacket helped create contrast with the lighter background and shirt. I used layered shading techniques to bring depth into the clothing while still keeping the texture clean.
Step 5
After completing the major areas, I went over the drawing again to refine the details. I darkened some shadows, cleaned rough edges, and improved the blending in certain areas. These finishing touches helped give the portrait a cleaner and more realistic appearance. Here's my finished work.

Completing this portrait of @bossj23 gave me a sense of satisfaction and motivation to continue improving my skills. Every artwork teaches me something new, and this piece helped me practice shading, blending, and facial structure more deeply. Thank you all for visiting my blog. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section and have a wonderful weekend.

The way you captured the details of the tie adjustment really adds a sense of sophistication and life to the portrait. Do you find it more challenging to draw the facial features or the hands when you are working on these classy, formal portraits? 🎨✨
