Good palazzo pants start with correct measurements. Take all measurements carefully while standing straight.

Waist measurement

Measure around the waist where the palazzo will sit. Do not pull the tape tight. Add comfort allowance if the waist will not use elastic.

Hip measurement

Measure around the fullest part of the hips or buttocks. This is very important because the crotch curve depends on this measurement.

Length

Measure from the waist straight down to the ankle or desired length. Palazzo pants are usually long, so measure carefully.

Thigh measurement

Measure around the widest part of the thigh. Palazzo pants should be loose here. Write all measurements down clearly and double-check them.

Materials Used in sewing
  • Ankara fabric (flowing fabrics work best)
  • Measuring tape
  • Tailor’s chalk
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Ruler
  • French curve
  • Elastic band or palazzo ropes
Marking of the Fabrics
  • Spread the fabric on a flat surface. Fold it lengthwise, with the right sides facing each other. You can use one quarter of the hip measurement plus 2 inches allowance to fold to avoid wasting the fabric. Align the edges properly and make sure the fabric is straight.
  • From the top, start by marking the waist line: From the folded edge, mark one quarter of the waist measurement + 2 inches seam allowance.
  • Hip line — From the waist line, measure 8–10 inches downward (this depends on body size) and mark the hip line.
  • Full length
From the waist line, measure the full length and mark the hem line. From the hip line downwards, mark a wide flare to create the palazzo shape. Palazzo pants are wide from top to bottom, so do not make this narrow. Add 1–2 inches seam allowance around all sides.
How to Get the Crotch Curve

The crotch curve gives the pants comfort and proper shape. Without it, the palazzo will pull, feel tight, or look wrong. On the hip line, measure one quarter of the hip measurement + 1 inch from the folded edge outward. Mark this point. This measurement controls how deep the crotch will be.

From that point, draw a short straight line upward to meet the waist line. To get the curve — Using your hand or a french curve, draw a smooth curve from the waist line down to the hip line. The curve should be gentle, not sharp. The curve should move slightly outward at the waist and then come back inward toward the hip line.

This shape allows the body to sit comfortably inside the pants. For the back part of the palazzo, extend the crotch curve 2 or 3 inches more outward than the front, then increase all the measurements by 2 inches down from the hip line. This gives space for the buttocks and prevents tightness at the back.
Always keep the curve smooth. Sharp or straight lines will cause discomfort.

Cutting of the Fabrics and How to Cut Without Mistakes
  • Before cutting, check all markings again and cut slowly using sharp scissors. Do not lift the fabric while cutting because it can shift and distort the shape.

  • Always cut outside the marking line. If you're unsure, cut slightly bigger. Extra fabric can be adjusted later.
