Why Babies are Born Fair, But Becomes Dark As they Grow (29/5/2026)

Good evening all. Today I bring to you a very interesting topic, aside from diary game post. And the topic is " Why babies are born fair but becomes dark as they grow" . Some parents including me sometimes wonder why it's so, and I have also seen some parents bleaching their toddlers, just to maintain the fair skin tone, which is very bad.

Let me use my little nephew as an example.

The above picture was him, when he was around 8 months old, and to be honest he was a very fair boy, infact the camera was not too good when I snapped him this picture, and the surprising part is that, as at that time the mother was not rubbing him any cream other than palm karnel oil. But this boy was very fair. But as he grows, we began to realize that he was getting darker even when a good nourishing cream was introduced to him.

Well according to my research, this is normal. And I urge parents to leave their kids skin alone, don't bleach their skin because you want them to become fair. When babies are in the womb, their natural skin has not fully developed it's final amount of melanin. Melanin is the natural pigment that gives colour to the skin, hair and the eyes. So at birth the baby's melanin production is still developing, that is why newly born babies comes out fair at birth.

But as they grow, they're exposed to light and their body begins to mature gradually, the melanin production increases and the change continues as the Child grows.

But sometimes genetic factors also play a part in it. A baby inherits gene from both parents and grandparents, so a child can still develop a skin tone that is different from the one we see immediately after birth.

But dear parents always have it in mind that no skin is better than the other. What matters most is raising a healthy and confident child. Every skin tone is great and unique, all you have to do is to maintain it. Please don't bleach your children's skin. It might cause some negative effects on them in the future. Thanks for Reading through 🌹.

It is fascinating how much pigmentation can change as children develop, and your nephew’s transformation is a common experience for many parents. I completely agree with you that using harsh chemicals to alter a child's natural skin tone is dangerous; focusing on healthy, nourishing care like you mentioned is definitely the right approach. Do you think genetics or environmental exposure to the sun plays a bigger role in this gradual darkening process for him?

Yes it plays a role, but genetics plays a bigger role than environmental exposure

Hello friend, your article is very educational. You remind me of my niece how fair and beautiful in complexion she was at birth but now she is dark in complexion. I'm very sure it's due to genetics factors because both her parents are dark in complexion. What you've said is true, colour changes in babys is normal therefore we should not bleach our children skin and pay the price later in life.

Thank you
