My younger cousin has been asking for a chess board for some weeks now. I told her that I would get her one if she tops her class.

For context, my cousin is that student who often gets B grades. In fact, you can predict her result from her level of preparation for that term's tests and examinations. I know that my cousin is bright. She only needs something that would make her even more ambitious.

I knew making her this promise will inspire her to aim higher.

This term, we've started something. We converted all her class notes into flashcards and short quizzes. We use tools like Google Classroom, Quizlet and Kahoot to make it much more fun and interactive. She practices these flashcards in the period of 1-3-7-21 days.

The goal is to help her understand and recall the lessons better. When children score less, it mostly because they couldn't store all that information in their head.

‎I’d get her a chess board ‎if she beats my expectations.

One thing I've learnt during my time as a student is the power of repetitive study in boosting your scores. As humans, we tend to remember information faster when we practice regularly. It's what I use when playing Scrabble.

If it works for me, an adult, then it can work for anyone, especially kids.

Tips for Parents

As parents, nothing makes us happier than seeing our children thrive and succeed. You can help your children perform better as well.

Start by,

  1. Making learning fun: For me, using games, quizzes, and other interactive tools does the trick.
  2. Use different study strategies to your advantage: If your child is studying a calculation-related course, e.g. mathematics, give them problem questions. If it's a regular subject, then stick to quizzes.
  3. Set achievable goals: It's easier to complete two sets of flashcards daily than 7 in one day. Help your child understand that setting simpler goals and working towards them makes achieving that goal possible.
  4. Practice repetitively: Your kids can unanimously agree on a time that works for them. Your role would be to help them stick to this routine so they can practice their study material regularly in order to reinforce learning.
  5. Stay supportive: Offer support and encouragement when need be.

I'd love to help you and your child on this journey. If you've got questions, I'd be in the comment section. Look forward to more stories on our progress.
