That morning the sun shined bright in our schoolyard. The sky was blue and clear overhead, a few wispy clouds floating lazily. Rows of tall coconut trees firmly located behind the yellow and green school block. The sun had just begun to warm our skin, but it was refreshing as the air was cool.

After the bell, we all streamed out of the classroom and into the yard. Immediately after, my friends and I met in the centre of the field. Some donned green sports kits, others in white, sporting black peci (traditional caps). We were all so different, yet we looked united and energetic, full of hope.

Some of our close friends began playing tag. They jogged along, laughing merrily. In the corner, there was another group of kids playing with a ball with great enthusiasm. One of my friends kicked the ball in such a hilarious way that we all burst out laughing when he nearly fell. Not too far from here, some other kids were standing chatting as they relaxed from their work.

Red and white flowers in black artistic pots lined the yard very neatly. These plants gave an aura of charm to the school and made it more charming and friendly. There was also a sign that said "Be Careful," which was a reminder to us to always be orderly and clean in the school grounds. The teachers too were seen around, now and then, peering at us with sympathetically smiling faces.

I joined in playing with my friends. Time seemed to fly by when we were playing together.

Even though it was just the plain old schoolyard, that sense of family meant so much. You didn't need any costly games or a particular location, just happy companions and a friendly environment. I took a breather before the bell rang to glance at the hilltop schoolhouse and realized how proud I was to be going there.

When the bell rang the second time, we were too bitchy to play anymore. Our Breaths were a little heavier, our faces sweaty, but our Hearts were happy. We found our way back to class on light feet and smiling faces. That morning was not only about playing; it was also about friendship, unity — and remembering what wonderful times I had.
