Teesta Barrage is not just a structure of concrete and iron, it is a long story intertwined with the life of the people of North Bengal. Located in Hatibandha Upazila of Lalmonirhat district, this barrage stands on the bank of Teesta river as if it controls the speed of the river but has left its beauty intact. Looking at the barrage from a distance, the first thing one notices are the lined gates, the massive blue-painted structure and the huge body of water flowing through it, sometimes calm and sometimes raging.

The Teesta River used to be raging in the monsoons and almost dried up in the dry season. This erratic nature created uncertainty in the lives of farmers in North Bengal. After the construction of Teesta barrage, that picture has changed a lot. The river water is controlled by barrages and stored for irrigation during the dry season, as a result of which thousands of hectares of land can be cultivated with rice, wheat, maize and various other crops. The water of the river brings the flow of life to the fields here, which has given a solid foundation to the economy of the entire region.

This barrage is not only important for agriculture but also used as a way for people to move. The road passes over the barrage, through which numerous people, motorcycles, bicycles and vehicles travel every day. It is an easy and important connecting bridge for the local people to cross the river from one side to the other. Looking around, one can see the broad chest of the river, the green trees in the distance, and the play of clouds floating across the sky which transforms even the walk into a kind of travel feeling.

Teesta Barrage has added a different dimension to North Bengal in terms of natural beauty. Especially in the afternoon or at sunset, the barrage area turns into a living canvas of color. The blue, gold and orange colors of the sky reflected in the water of the river creating a wonderful scene. Many people visit here with their families, some take pictures, some stand quietly on the banks of the river and enjoy the silence of nature. Standing around the barrage, the sweet smell of the river floats in the air, which gives a kind of peace to the mind.

People's emotions and memories are also connected with Teesta barrage. When the barrage gates are opened during monsoons,Then many people flocked to see the roar of the river water and the intensity of the current. The scene is as terrifying as it is fascinating. Again, when the water in the river recedes during the winter, wide sandbanks are seen, where the movement of birds increases and another form of the river is visible. All in all, Teesta Barrage is not just a water control project, it is a collective reflection of North Bengal's life, livelihood, nature and beauty.
The experience of collecting photos from the Teesta barrage was not limited to photography for me, but rather an emotional journey. When I stood on the barrage with my camera in hand, I realized how rich this place is in the play of light and sky. Sometimes the open blue sky, sometimes the light suddenly covered by clouds every moment created a different frame. What attracted me the most while taking pictures was the color of the river water and its movement. At times the color of the water seemed different sometimes deep blue, sometimes gray, sometimes golden in the sunlight.

The gates and parts of the barrage give the picture a sense of solid structure, and the soft flow of the river that flows by it creates a beautiful contrast to that hardness. I tried to capture this contrast in photography.Walking over the barrage, the distance and the play of lines are visible. The blue railings lined up one after the other create depth in the image, which comes out great in wide angle shots. In some frames, people have been kept very small, so as to understand the position of people in front of the huge structure and nature. In this place, the relationship between people, nature and technology is easily captured by the camera. As the light softens in the afternoon, the joy of photographing increases.
The clouds in the sky, the play of light and shadow on the river and the shadow of the barrage all in all, each shot was telling a story. I forgot about the time to take pictures.I didn't realize when the sun had fallen in the western sky. The cool touch of the river in the air and the silence of the surroundings calmed the mind.
