History and Profile of Masjid Agung Islamic Centre Lhokseumawe

Masjid Agung Islamic Centre Lhokseumawe is one of the most important religious landmarks in Lhokseumawe City. More than just a place of worship, it serves as a center of Islamic civilization and community life.
The construction of the mosque began in 2001, when Lhokseumawe was still the capital of North Aceh Regency under the leadership of Regent Dr. Tarmizi Karim. The project was initiated in response to the need for a representative grand mosque for the community.

Location
The mosque was built on the former site of the Lhokseumawe city football stadium, transforming the area into a major religious and social center.

Inauguration
After years of construction, the mosque was officially inaugurated around 2010 and has since functioned as the main mosque of the city.
Funding
The development was supported by:
PT Arun, Local government and Community donations.
The total construction cost reached more than IDR 120 billion.

Architectural Characteristics

The mosque features a Middle Eastern architectural style, combined with elements inspired by the legacy of Samudra Pasai, the first Islamic kingdom in the Indonesian archipelago.
Main features include:
Large blue domes, Classical Islamic ornaments, Symmetrical and monumental design, Spacious and green open areas. This design reflects the grandeur, beauty, and spiritual values of Islam.

Masjid Agung Islamic Centre Lhokseumawe can accommodate approximately 14,000 worshippers
This large capacity allows the mosque to host major religious events such as:
Friday prayers, Eid prayers, Grand Islamic lectures, Mass religious gatherings

The wide green area creates a beautiful and open view toward the mosque. From this field, the grand domes of the Islamic Center look even more majestic, especially in the morning or during sunset. The combination of the mosque’s elegant architecture and the spacious field in front of it gives a strong impression of dignity and unity. It feels like a place where religion and civic life meet in harmony.

Hira Field
In front of Masjid Agung Islamic Centre Lhokseumawe, there is a large open field known as Lapangan Hira. This field is not just an empty space. It is an important place for the people of Lhokseumawe. Lapangan Hira often becomes the center of government activities and official city events. Every year, the Independence Day ceremony is held here with full respect and pride. Many other formal events are also organized in this field, attended by government officials, students, and the community.

Functions and Social Role
In addition to serving as the main place of worship, the mosque also functions as:
