SLC-S29/W2 | How to Photograph Lakes / Swamps / Calm Ponds
![]() |
|---|
Dear Steemit Team,
Entering the second week, participants will learn about techniques for photographing tranquil water landscapes. The main subjects can be lakes, small swamps, and natural ponds. As we know, these types of locations offer a sense of tranquillity, with clear water reflections and harmonious colours being the key to producing visually and emotionally powerful photographs.
It is important to note that lakes and swamps are not only beautiful to look at, but they can also evoke a sense of peace, which can be enjoyed when captured with the right techniques.
Week 2 Learning Materials

There are several things to consider when taking photos in the second week, including Water Reflections, Photo Symmetry, Natural Colours, and Calm Atmosphere and Visual Storytelling.
1. Water Reflections
From the calm water that serves as the main feature of the lake, which functions like a natural mirror. We can see reflections of the sky, trees, or mountains on the water's surface, which can enhance the visual impact of the photo.
There are a few tips to keep in mind:
- Take photos when the water is calm, meaning there are no waves.
- The best times to choose are early morning or late afternoon.
- Ensure that the reflection is clear and not cut off by other elements.
In water, we will see clear reflections and produce photos that feel calmer and more aesthetic.
2. Photo Symmetry
A symmetrical photograph can be created when the object and its reflection appear balanced.
You need to pay attention to the following:
- Ensure that the horizon line in the camera is centred when you want to emphasise symmetry.
- You can use important objects such as trees, mountains or the sky to create reflections in calm water.
- You need to avoid slanted angles, which will certainly ruin the balance.
Remember that good symmetry will give an impression of stability, neatness and calmness.
3. Natural Colours
Natural colours are very important in landscape photography, such as lakes and swamps.
Some tips to keep in mind:
- You don't need to avoid excessive filters.
- Just use natural colours such as sky, water and plants.
- You should adjust the exposure so that the colours are not too dark or too bright.
In a photograph, natural colours will make the photo feel more authentic, aesthetic and pleasing to the eye.
4. Calm Atmosphere and Visual Storytelling
A good photo of a lake is not only beautiful, but also conveys a sense of tranquillity.
You need to create the following atmosphere:
- Keep the composition simple
- Reduce and avoid distracting objects.
- Pay attention to a stable viewpoint
Allow the photograph to ‘create’ itself through its own tranquillity.
