Dear Steemit Team,
In this sixth week, participants will learn visual storytelling, which is how to make a photo not only beautiful to the eye, but also able to tell a story about the identity of a place.

Participants are trained to determine strong compositions, capture the atmosphere and meaning of a location, combine objects, people, and the environment, and create a series of photos that feel like a single story. The goal is not just to photograph buildings, but to convey the story and spirit of the place.

Week 6 Learning Materials

There are several things to consider when taking photos in this sixth week, including Visual Storytelling, Story Composition, Meaning of a Place, and Angle & Perspective.

1. Visual Storytelling
Every landmark has its own story. So, when photographing a landmark, ask yourself:

  • What is the function of this place?
  • What is its history?
  • What do people do here?

You can use several elements to build a story, including human activities, architectural details, visitors' expressions, and the surrounding environment. Try combining all of these to make your photos feel more alive.

2. Story Composition
You can use the following techniques:

  • Wide Shot: You can take wide photos to show the entire location and everything clearly.
  • Medium Shot: Don't forget to take photos by bringing the camera closer to show human interaction with the place.
  • Detail Shot: Simply take photos of ornaments, including carvings, writings, or wall textures to reinforce your story.
It's a good idea to take these three types of photos in one location.

3. Meaning of a Place
You don't need to focus too much on form, but you can look for cultural symbols, historical values, and local customs. A small example:
If you visit a monument commemorating a struggle, you can show the flag, visitors praying, or commemorative inscriptions found there. This will definitely make the photo feel more emotional.

4. Angle & Perspective
Don't focus on just one angle, but try several angles, for example:

  • Low angle with the aim of making the landmark look more majestic.
  • Eye level to make the place feel more natural.
  • Framing (through a door/tree) to give a cinematic impression.
