Welcome to the second week of Steemit Challenge, Season 27. This week, our beloved mentor, @ashkhan, discussed methods for reducing swelling. Here is what I learned this week.

Swelling, types, and pathophysiology.

Swelling is a physical condition that occurs when our body is affected by sprains, strains, inflammation, infection, or allergic conditions. Swelling can occur due to the accumulation of fluid or blood clots in the body.

Signs and Symptoms

There are a few signs and symptoms of swelling.

  • Redness
  • Feeling Warmth
  • Affected area becomes puffy.
  • Tenderness
  • Limited range of motion.

Types

Inflammatory Swelling

Inflammatory swelling occurs when certain parts of the body are affected by inflammation or irritation. Our blood vessel leaked, which allows fluid, protein, or white blood cells to move into the nearby tissue. Usually affected area becomes swollen.

Non-inflammatory swelling

Non-inflammatory swelling occurred for reasons other than inflammation. Such as prolonged standing, heart failure, damage to the lymphedema, and low blood protein can cause non-inflammatory swelling.

Pitting Swelling

Pitting swelling is when the swollen area leaves a pit when it is pressed by a finger or anything else. Causes by Kidney disease, liver disease, the use of steroids, and blood pressure drugs.

Non-pitting Swelling

Non-pitting swelling area feels tight, firm, or rubbery instead of soft. Diseases like lymphedema, thyroid problems cause this. It is very common after surgery or radiation therapy.

Pathophysiology

When fluid shifts from the blood vessels into the interstitial space, it causes swelling. That happened if the blood pressure increased or decreased, which allowed more fluid to leak through the vascular permeability. If the Lymphatic system doesn't work properly, that can also cause swelling due to kidney or heart failure.

A patient with the symptom, history of injury or illness.

I would like to share my own history in this case. I love sports and I regularly play. Now, I am in my 30s. My body starts betraying me while playing. Decades ago, I could suffer a lot of rough tackles without paying any attention. I am a wicketkeeper. I could grab balls after ball naked hand, without a glove. Now thing changes. Last Friday, I took part in a cricket match after a long time. And things happened that should have happened. I got hit in my left wrist while batting. It was heavy pain. Now, it’s almost cured. I took an ice pack regularly. As I said in my week 1 post that I am a pharmacist. It’s not a heavy job, my wrist has had enough rest. As I am a right-handed person and my left wrist was injured. Haha.

Treat the patient's pain by performing or applying physiotherapy management.

I, myself, got injured during a cricket match. I've performed RICE. Let me explain TWO steps.

Ice

I used Icing since I was a kid. I always thought it was a homemade treatment formula that worked. A few years ago, I acknowledged that it’s an approved medical formula and often suggested to cure pain and swelling. Well, back to the point, I'm icing for 10-12 minutes, tid, for a week. Though my pain and swelling disappeared on day 4. But I continued like an antibiotic dose. Haha.

Compression

I used a compression method for quick healing alongside icing. I use a wristband for a week.

Task 1 (1.25/1.5)You shared the great knowledge about swelling, its symptoms, types and pathophysiology. However, you should add a bit more explanation of pathophysiology; otherwise, you did really well.
Task 2 (2.25/2.5)Yes, wrist and ankle are the common injuries in sports. After 30 bones start degeneration so you have to take more care to avoid such incidents. You did right by not moving the wrist much and then following the physiotherapy protocol. An wrist pain can be treated faster by following the RICE protocol. It would be better if you guess the type of swelling you're suffering from.
Task 3 (6/6)Yes, after sports injury on wrist the better way to treat by following the RICE protocol to relieve pain, reduce swelling and improve ROM. Rest is the much-needed thing after an wrist pain; immediate icing can reduce the internal bleeding and prevent further swelling. I appreciate that you follow all the things.
