The Role of Women in MSMEs Strengthens the Family Economy

Ayu Heni Rosan, Head of the National Crafts Department (Dekranas) at the Ministry of Investment and Downstream Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), stated that empowering MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) has an impact on the family economy. In her remarks at the MSME Competency Improvement Forum, Ayu emphasized the importance of women's roles in the MSME sector.

Ayu explained that through MSME empowerment, women not only support their husbands but also have the potential to become CEOs who drive the community economy. "Women don't just help their husbands, but have the potential to become CEOs and move the community economy," Ayu said at the Ministry of Investment and Downstream Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) office in Jakarta on Thursday (August 21, 2025).

According to Ayu, empowering MSMEs requires collaboration between the government, practitioners, academics, and MSMEs. "The government facilitates this by improving competency, standardization, and access to financing for MSMEs," Ayu said.

Ayu said the government is encouraging business-to-business collaboration to result in the signing of partnership agreements between large businesses and MSMEs. In this forum, the government provides a platform for MSMEs to obtain information on financing, export procedures, business legality, and product standardization.

Indonesia is now the country with the largest digital economy in ASEAN, largely thanks to the contribution of women. "In Indonesia, 64.5 percent of the approximately 65 million MSMEs are managed by women," said Ayu, quoting Deputy Minister of Trade Dyah Roro Esti.

Ayu also emphasized that the global target for women-owned MSMEs requires both short-term and long-term strategies. The government is targeting MSMEs with export-ready products and providing training on regulations and product standards in export destination countries.
