Canadian Ambassador Visits Aceh for the First Time

Banda Aceh — Canadian Ambassador to Indonesia, Jess Dutton, met with the Wali Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, His Excellency Tgk. Malik Mahmud Al Haythar, in Meuligoe Wali Nanggroe, on Wednesday, November 5, 2025.

The Head of Cooperation and Public Relations for Wali Nanggroe, Zulfikar Idris, stated that this was Ambassador Dutton's first visit since assuming office as Canada's diplomatic representative in Indonesia.

Ambassador Dutton was accompanied by Arielle Sobhani (Second Secretary, Political and Public Affairs), Novi Anggriani (Senior International Assistance Officer), and Lina Farsia (interpreter). Meanwhile, Wali Nanggroe was accompanied by Special Staff Dr. Muhamad Raviq.

The Canadian Ambassador expressed his appreciation and pleasure at the opportunity to visit the Land of Rencong.

"This is my first visit to Aceh, and I am very pleased to meet with the Wali Nanggroe. We discussed the important role he plays in Aceh, as well as Canada's involvement in the region over the years," said Dutton.

He added that the visit also provided an opportunity to better understand Acehnese culture and heritage as an important part of Indonesia.

"Going forward, I hope that relations and cooperation between Canada and Aceh can continue to grow, especially in the areas of culture and activities that strengthen people-to-people ties," he added.

Meanwhile, the Wali Nanggroe warmly welcomed the Canadian Ambassador's entourage.

"We are very pleased with the visit of the Canadian Ambassador today. This is a great honor for us, for me personally, and for the people of Aceh," said the Wali Nanggroe.

The Wali Nanggroe also noted the long history of relations between Aceh and Canada.

"During the conflict, Canada expressed its willingness to play a role as a mediator. However, due to the situation and the considerable geographical distance, communication at that time was mostly conducted through closer partners, such as Sweden and Helsinki," said Wali Nanggroe.

Furthermore, Wali Nanggroe expressed its gratitude for Canada's support during the 2004 tsunami disaster.

"We will never forget that. All forms of support will remain etched in Aceh's history as part of our extraordinary friendship," said Wali Nanggroe.
