Writing || Post-Disaster Education Recovery
Dear friends, admins, and all moderators of this beloved community. May we always be under His protection!
Post-disaster educational recovery certainly takes a long time, especially for a country struck by a disaster that is still developing. However, education must continue to be upheld for the sake of morals and the nation's future preparedness, in competing with other countries, and for the sake of survival.
Post-disaster educational recovery is a very difficult prospect to achieve, especially if the country has selfishly chosen not to accept aid from foreign countries. Therefore, in this case, psychosocial support is crucial in addition to physical development. Because the impact of a disaster certainly leaves every child of the nation, and indeed all citizens, in shock and trauma.
The impact on education from disasters, such as the collapse of school buildings and the destruction of all teaching and learning facilities, has been devastating. However, the government continues to strive to ensure that education continues as best as possible despite the impact of the disaster. Various initiatives from the government, non-governmental organizations, and local communities are working together to ensure children can return to learning and recover from their trauma.
Here are some true stories about post-disaster education recovery in Aceh, Indonesia:
1. The Spirit of Learning in Emergency Tents After the Aceh Earthquake
After the earthquake in Pidie Jaya, Aceh, in 2016, many children were traumatized and reluctant to return to school buildings. Teachers and volunteers did not remain silent. They set up emergency schools in tents to continue the teaching and learning process.
The primary focus in the initial phase was not a rigorous academic curriculum, but rather psychological recovery through play, singing, and storytelling.
2. Sukma Bangsa School after the 2004 Aceh Tsunami
The story of Sukma Bangsa School is a monumental example of a long-term commitment to post-disaster education. Established after the devastating tsunami struck Aceh, this school became a "house of hope" for children who had lost everything.
With the support of various parties, the school was built with disaster-resistant construction and a curriculum that emphasizes the values of peace and resilience.
This story demonstrates that with a strong foundation, education can be the key to recovering from adversity and building a better future.
3. Education Recovery after the 2025 Aceh Flash Floods
The flash floods that struck our province of Aceh a month ago also caused many school buildings to collapse and even disappear. However, we are still traumatized by the impact of the disaster. There are no signs of any immediate action by the relevant authorities on the collapsed school buildings.
This disaster is a serious one that has affected almost all of Aceh Province. It will certainly take quite a long time to recover.
Friends, that concludes my presentation for today. I welcome your suggestions and comments. Please forgive me for any errors in this post. Wassalam.
