Writing || The impact of education in the midst of natural disasters
Dear friends, admins, and all moderators of our beloved community. May we always be under His protection!
Education in the midst of a disaster certainly faces significant challenges, and the impact of this can hamper ensuring sustainable education through the learning process. Natural disasters significantly impact students' psychological recovery. However, this also presents an opportunity to integrate appropriate natural disaster education into the curriculum.
Currently, our beloved province of Aceh, Indonesia, is being hit by natural disasters in the form of floods and flash floods. Many school buildings have been damaged or even lost, swept away by the strong currents.
Some of the main impacts on education in the midst of natural disasters include:
1. Infrastructure Damage
Many educational facilities are damaged or even completely destroyed. In this case, after a disaster, emergency classroom solutions such as tents or semi-permanent structures are needed to continue education.
2. Psychological Impact
Students and teachers affected by natural disasters often experience trauma. This requires intensive psychosocial support for recovery.
3. Difficulty Accessing Locations
Another impact is that it is very difficult for teachers and even students to access or reach the school location. Sometimes roads are cut off, and bridges are damaged by the disaster.
4. Uncertainty in the Learning Process
The teaching and learning process cannot continue as usual after a disaster strikes. This will certainly reduce the quality of education.
5. Damage to Teaching and Learning Equipment
Learning resources such as textbooks, computers, projectors, and so on cannot be reused if affected by a disaster, such as a flood. This equipment also requires a long and time-consuming process to re-procure.
The Solution
1. Establishing Emergency Schools
The government or education providers must provide temporary classrooms, whether tents or other facilities, to ensure the teaching and learning process continues, even if it is not optimal.
2. Multi-Stakeholder Involvement
Collaboration between the central and regional governments, non-governmental organizations, and even parents or guardians of students is crucial in managing emergency disaster education.
Friends, that concludes my presentation for today. I welcome your suggestions and comments. I apologize for any errors in this post. Wassalam.
