SLC-S33/W6 | Our Surroundings: Let´s Talk About The News - How has traffic been in your region
How would you describe the general traffic flow in your region during peak hours? Are there significant differences in traffic between weekdays and weekends?
In my region, specifically here in Abuja, Nigeria, on the Utako side of Abuja, the general traffic flow on the main road that leads to other towns in Utako is moderate to heavy during peak hours in the morning and evening, when people are going to work, school, the market, and other places; the evening is when people are returning home.
At the time I took all the photos shared in the post, traffic moved relatively well when there were no accidents, road construction, holdups, or any other disruptions. During weekdays, there is usually high traffic, while during weekends the traffic is usually less.
What are the conditions of the main roads in terms of maintenance and signage?
The main road is fairly wide and is in good condition. In FCT Abuja, all the roads in the city are relatively in good condition. Some parts of the road surface are usable, with a clearly defined central median separating traffic directions in Abuja. The median of the main road is maintained with plants and palm trees, which makes the road look beautiful.
On the main road, the curbs are well painted in white and black, which makes the layout of the road visible. Also, there is a road sign that looks clearer, marking some areas that would have improved road safety and make it easy for motorists to navigate.
What is the current state of traffic signs and traffic lights in your area?
On all roads in Abuja, there are traffic signs and traffic lights because they are important for controlling traffic and preventing motorists from having accidents. For this particular road that I captured, there are limited visible traffic signs, while traffic lights are not many in the road.
I think the government needs to improve the condition and availability of signs since this road has busy junctions, pedestrian crossings, and major intersections in the Utako area. What would help drivers understand the road rules and improve safety are traffic lights, lane markings, and properly maintained signs.
What types of vehicles are most prevalent on the main roads in your region?
There are different types of vehicles on the main road. There are also tricycles, but what is common on the main roads are private cars and commercial vehicles, with a few taxis that also contribute to transportation. In Abuja, motorcycles are restricted, but most people use motorcycles to move through busy areas.
How would you describe the driving culture in your region? Are drivers responsible behind the wheel?
The driving culture in my region is mixed. A lot of drivers follow traffic rules and drive carefully, but some motorists don't follow traffic rules; instead they are usually impatient and overtake unnecessarily.

What the government is encouraging in my region is responsible driving since everyone is making use of the road. Drivers are encouraged to respect speed limits, traffic signs, and other road users, and traffic regulations. For all of these to be enforced, there is usually road safety officers standing on the road.
Environmental impact & (With pictures + videos) & Location (Steem Atlas pin)
There is both positive and negative effects that transportation has on the environment. One of the negative environmental impacts is pollution through exhaust fumes and noise pollution from the sound of vehicles and motorists.
The environment is greenery full of palm trees and other vegetation along the middle of the road and by the roadsides. It is all these palm trees that help to improve the appearance of the area and help to absorb some air pollution, and create shade.
The best thing to do is to encourage drivers to maintain and service their motorcycles, vehicles, etc always, which will help to reduce unnecessary idling and improve transportation.
