Shaheed Shukkor Gofur Park, Barishal
ٱلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللَّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
Dear friends, I hope you are all doing well. I am also Alhamdulillah, doing very well by the endless mercy of Allah. Today, I have come before you to participate in the weekly contest, where we are asked to talk about and show a place we like. I will talk about a small place, and the reason this small place is my favorite is that bigger places tend to get very crowded. It is located in the southwestern region of Bangladesh, in the Barishal district. The place, a little way off from the city, is called Shaheed Shukkur Gafur Park.

This place dates back a long time, that is, from the British era up until Bangladesh gained independence. At that time, there was a person named Shaheed Shukr Gafur, who died in the war. Since our independence, his children and their descendants have maintained this park in his name. People who come here do not need to pay any money; in fact, they can enter for free. This is a step towards freedom. It is not a place of death; it is a very small place.

There isn’t a big area here; they have made one area with two ponds and built roads around the ponds and arranged seating. There is a natural environment with plenty of trees around, and there is also a water tank. It’s really a wonderful place and would be the best spot to sit and spend time. I arrived a little before the evening, so there weren’t many people. In fact, it was just me, my spouse, and a few other people around who were spending their time here.

Another point is that here they didn’t actually show the committee for entry; rather, they didn’t create any kind of gate for entering here. Instead, this is a place along the road where you can enter through the open fields surrounding it. No one needs permission to enter here, and you can very easily access it from the road; you just go a little, then you have to climb up three or four steps. In the picture below, you can see a boy driving a car along the road and then coming up to enter this park.

I said this is a park, and there is a lot of natural greenery around. Various types of trees are mentioned, such as the collector tree, Gan Akashmoni tree, and there are jackfruit trees, among others. There are different kinds of trees. Children play here, older youths come and chat here, hang out. Those who are nearby also come and hang out. Inside the country (within the area), there are small, beautiful things similar to plants, like little trees, but there are no flowers here because it’s an open space and everyone takes the flowers away.

Let me tell the brief history of this. I asked a child about it, they are only 10 years old, and they said, 'I have been seeing it since I was born.' And apparently, it has looked the same from before; there is no improvement or deterioration. However, it became clear that sometimes it is clean, and it has always been a beautiful place. I think it is a nice natural park for sitting and spending time, for enjoying some mental calm.
