Finally settled in the lecture hall after the morning transport struggle.

My first lecture was scheduled for 8 AM today. So I had to leave the house as early as 7:15 AM to ensure that I make it on time.

For context, our campus has been grappling with a serious transportation issue lately. You could arrive at the gate early, but finding a bus shuttle or tricycle to take you to your lecture hall would take centuries. That's because the population of students outweighs the number of shuttles available.

Because of this, students end up struggling for a seat in the available shuttles daily. My colleagues and I have written to the appropriate authorities to get this fixed. Hopefully, that should be resolved soon.

But back to this morning.

When I arrived at the school's gate, the entrance was swarm as expected with students, yet no single shuttle on sight. I saw some cars zoom past one.

One of the girls standing next to me spotted a black Lexus RX 330 SUV and whispered, "Oh, he's arrived. I wish that he could just stop to pick us up." I suspected that the person in question was her lecturer who probably taught the 8 AM class she was rushing to. I felt pity for her. She'd miss that class because most lecturers do not allow you to step in after they arrive.

With my own time ticking, I realised that I couldn't wait any longer. So feeling uncertain about finding a shuttle quickly, I contemplated trekking to class. That's approximately a 30 minutes trek from the gate to my faculty.

Just as I started walking, a car horned at me. Turning round, it was one of my lecturers. He had spotted us on our uniforms and signalled for students from our faculty to join him. The little space in his car got cramped up with five bodies huddled together.

Minutes later, another colleague of ours who owns a car joined us. She asked the remaining people to hop in.

Gosh, we were packed like sardines. But in that split moment, I was grateful. Grateful for the kind people around us. It made me reflect on the power of being in a position to help and actually choosing to do so.

Sometimes, you just have to take the first step.... 🌹

Honestly, it's easy to point out what’s wrong. We see it every day:

  • people hosting 5-hours podcasts to speak about a problem or
  • filming a fire incident with their phones instead of fetching a bucket of water and soap.

I find this strangely ironic of our modern world. In fact, I truly believe that many of our problems in the world today could be solved if we shifted our focus from documenting the issue to actively fixing it.

Sometimes, we don’t always have to wait for "someone else" to act when we have the capacity to do it ourselves.

I pray that I could also always be in a good position to help people in need as well.

Sort:

Me gusto leer tu publicacion amiga, la bondad es un grandioso valor, tener empatia tambien lo es, reconozco que tu profesor fue una excelente personal al hecharles una mano para que pudieran llegar a tiempo a su facultad.

Thank you for the visit and kind words. I agree with you.
Kindness is a core principle that's worthy of emulation
