Do you think Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, etc., can be taken seriously as a news source? If so, how do you avoid being misled?

 

Social media became is obligatory part of our daily life. Nowadays it is difficult to imaging that there is anyone who has no access to any of the social media website. There are few different reasons:

• first, it is accessibility, we are lucky that today we have many companies who offer flat rate access to Internet. That means we usually pay a monthly amount and we have endless access to Internet as well as any time

• anyone can create an account, majority of them are free registration and also you can post as much as possible

• having video possibility, people use it because it is easy and quick to make a short video and simply issue it

Because anyone can express his opinion to any event and we know that everyone has his own opinion this is not always a true interpretation of the events. That is why we should not easily trust to what is shown in Social media.

I advise to use different news source, official news channels, still old fashioned newspaper and make your mind without being influenced by anyone.

 

Do you use social media to study or learn something?

 

No, I do not use social for learning or study and I do not think that it is a good and knowledgeable source. For me, if I need to study it remains library is the best source. Luckily we have still big library in the University with books and new studies, research works. We also have an electronic database of modern research and also modern information in any field. On other hand I still love the fact of being in a big room with many books, comfortable sitting opportunity and also to enjoy the silence of a big hall. I feel that I learn better there and definitely not on small screen of phones, laptop or computer with hundreds of cookies with different advertisement that always distract my attention and that causes wasting time and definitely giving no information that I need.

 

What is more important to you when using social media: knowledge or entertainment, and why?

 

When I use on and off social media, it is definitely for entertainment. It is good to catch up reading the opinion of people on some simple staff like the place for holiday, some hotel reviews and also to see what I can visit when I am on that destination place. I also like to see review of places where you can buy nice food or visit good interesting places. Those information are more neutral and usually the users are friendly, there is no critic and just normal conversation.

 

Do you worry about the amount of time you spend on social media?

 

It is common that once we are in social media then the time flies so quickly, we often spend about 5-6 hours in social media and often even on the way to work, in bus, train or people when walking to any place looking on their smartphones. It is worrying that we spend so much time for social media and stop doing much in real life. We do not move much and that can lead to lack of fitness, young children using social media and loosing the skills of living and communicating in real life with real people. That is why children suffer from early access to social media. We definitely need to reduce our time using social media.
