The Amazing Number of Active Users Here in SteemLand — Another PerspectivesteemCreated with Sketch.

in #steem5 years ago

I've noticed that we all — and I include myself in that — occasionally express our worries and frustrations over the "retention problem" we have with the various Steem applications, and how there aren't enough active users.

Maybe that is true, on a large scale.

On the other hand, I have often found that when you drill into all the things that are contributed here on an individual basis, there are actually a lot of "active users."

What Do I Mean?

As an exercise — usually in an attempt to find "promising" newcomers — I sometimes spend a little time looking at the "new posts/all tags" feed, just to see what comes up.

Depending on the time of the day... somewhere between five and fifteen posts a minute, it seems. Which is nothing, compared to — let's say — twitter getting 6,000 tweets per SECOND.

So we can lament that.

On the other hand, I find it amazing that every time I engage in this little exercise, I usually come across a half-dozen active content creators I have never heard of and some of whom have been busily "at it" here for a year, or even two years or more.

It's just a reminder that sometimes what we are talking (complaining) about has different ways we can look at it.

From time to time, I like to look at @penguinpablo's daily analyses of what's going on, "by the numbers" in the Steem ecosystem.

Our eucalyptus tree is blooming...

After watching many months of declines across many of the categories he tracks, it would seem that things have stabilized, and are even tending up a little bit... including in the all-important engagement related areas... posting, comments, votes...

I suppose we could be dismissive and just argue that "activity rises and falls with the price of Steem," Fair enough... but which is the "leading" indicator, and which is the "trailing?"

Are more people interested in Steem (the Steem-related apps) because the price of Steem has been showing signs of trending up, OR is the price of Steem trending up because more people are interested in the various apps and front ends, and are using them more?

I suppose it's a bit of a chicken/egg thing, but still...

Have an awesome day out there!

It's amazing how much good stuff is going on that you're not tapped into, it's the way it should be I guess. We seem to be stable atm as far as I can tell, rather than growing or declining.

It'll be interesting to see the extent to which activity becomes custom jsons (ie games) over posts and comments in the future, I'm sure that's the way it's going to go!

I expect you're right... gaming will probably end up accounting for the greatest number of "hits," even if not for the greatest "content density."

I think @abh12345 is the only person attempting to measure content density.

@arcange's stats now show types of interaction btw!
