There is a direct parallel related to $$ EARNINGS and the number of followers you have. I am new to STEEMIT but this is pretty obvious. It's a good thing not a bad thing. It's not a conspiracy LOL! It's community.

A few days ago I was totally frustrated with STEEM. I have calmed down now (thanks to Fi go Follow him) and I am optimistic and understand STEEMIT is not about ME or MONEY ... It's community!

But obviously earnings are the unique aspect to steemit that is attractive and rewarding!!
