This day in music history: Shaggy
February 17, 2001.
Shaggy's album Hot Shot hits #1 in America, where it goes on to sell over 6 million copies.
Throwback time on this hot jam.
You couldn't go anywhere without this tune blasting on the radio. The clubs were playing it on heavy rotation. The bassline was rattling the back windows of cars with their 12" sub-woofers blaring.
This was Shaggy's big hit. He was on the map after this one.
The contrast between Rikrok's r&b styling juxtaposed with Shaggy's Reggae/Dancehall sensibilities produces a very memorable track.
The video was a funny lighthearted affair. Rikrok cheats on his girlfriend and is caught. He goes to see Shaggy who says to tell her "It Wasn't Me" as it forms the basis of the song.
