Market Square, Uyo — Uyo's Best Grocery Store

One of the biggest grocery store in my city is where I decided to review for this challenge. This grocery store is embedded in one of the big malls in my city called Tropicana. It's the best grocery store you can find whatever you're looking for.

Location

Market Square is found inside Tropicana as a collaborative business with other businesses still housed in the mall. It's located at Udoudoma Avenue and you can use various routes to enter. You can use Aka road or Oron Rd to visit the mall. That's if you're coming from Oron Rd, after the traffic light of udoudoma, but if you're coming from Aka Rd, it would be before the traffic light.

The official address for this mall is Itiam Etoi Rd, Uyo 520102, Akwa Ibom. The big building you're seeing here isn't just the grocery store alone. There are other options establishments inside the mall, but the grocery store still stand out as an independent entity.

Management

Ebele Enunwa, the founder and CEO of Sundry Markets Limited (SML) is the founder of Market Square, Uyo. His desire to provide a modern grocery store with shopping and experiences across Nigeria made him start creating an impact in big cities in Nigeria. The management he placed to oversee activities in the mall is a really doing a great job as there have been no cases of mismanagement, delayed payment of staff, inadequate maintenance and failed customer service.

Market Square, Uyo started operation in 2021, but was founded in the year, 2015. Its establishment in Uyo has been of great benefit to those who import things they couldn't get easily in Uyo. If served as the home for both the rich and the poor and shopping isn't expensive.

As the name implies, it's a market square. You tend to get quality and affordable product and services there. Currently, they have another branch at Ikot Ekpene, newly launched. It's not easy to own lot of branches for one famous name. They have a distinct logo that differentiate them from others.

Operation & Operational Services

Market Square Uyo, being one of the branches in Nigeria operates in different ways and has a lot of activities carried out by different people. I'll list their activities simultaneously. I may not be able to get the total number of employees working here as people get hired for different purposes.

• Kitchen Services: They have employees with chef certifications, who operate behind the scenes in bread production, cake, bakeries and food preparations. These qualified chefs ensure that dishes are present in quantities and they have assistance from sale representatives who are about 10 to ensure the smooth running of the counter to satisfy customers who come to make purchases without delay. They usually appear on white.

• Attendants: These sales attendants ensure they standby to attend to customers who asks for the location of certain things or if they have a particular product. This mall is broad with lots of aisle and in each aisle, you'll see attendants. These attendants also ensure they keep records of things that are exhausted for a refill.

• Cashier Operations: These are people who ensure shopper's goods and accounted for, payments received and goods packaged well for these items shoppers to take out of the the mall. They also have the head of operations who keep records of all transactions made online for accountability.

• They have employees who restock shelves and ensure records are kept or taken for goods that are out of stock. They also have workers who ensure that they satisfy customers by helping them take out their goods using a trolley.

• Security and checkpoint officers:: They have personnels who stand to check goods bought by shoppers and also tear their receipt to avoid cases of buying with an old receipt. They check dates and time to ensure accountability of service. The checkpoint officers collects your bags and give you a tag to get it after shopping.

The grocery store opens by 7Am and closes by 11pm.

Facilities — Electricity

Market Square has a lot of facilities which I couldn't singlehandedly go round because pictures aren't allowed in most of these facilities. So I'll be sharing some of the sections I could capture on picture. They have;

• Cashier and warehouse assistant etc....

Now some sections includes,

• Trolley section: Trolleys and shopping baskets are kept at the entrance of the grocery store so that shoppers can take and do their shopping. This section is where it's alway kept.

• Starchy foods and raw packaged food section: This section is where raw foods like peeled cassava chips, potatoes, green beans and other fresh foods and veggies are kept inside in a refrigerator to avoid getting spoilt. This is one of the big deep refrigerators and it's three that are visible here. So by the right is where you can find these french fries and chips.

• Fresh Fish and Ice-cream section: This is by the left of the first refrigerator and as you can see, they are different types and sizes of frozen fishes. They aren't too close and the fish doesn't smell even with the fact that the refrigerator is opened. In-between the first time in refrigerator, you can see groundnut oil of different sizes and the likes.

• Fresh Meat & Chicken: This is the second refrigerator and as you can see, there are fresh meats packaged in foils, meats of different sizes. All these meats are frozen and are still fresh for purchase. Do you know the interesting part? It's cheap.

• Dry food, herbs and spices*: These herbs, spices and foods that are dry and not perishable easily are kept in baskets and in a place that's not too cold, as cold can spoil them. This is another section, not really close to the refrigerators. Example of such is the tiger nut

• Fruits and fresh spices: This is another section of standing refrigerator that's not too cold, but on medium temperature. Fruits such as apples, grapes and pomegranates are packaged and kept in this refrigerator to make them still fresh and cold for consumption.

• Beverage section: The beverage section is two-sided with all types of beverages ranging from milk either liquid or dry. Milo and other beverages people may use for tea or coffee. They are of different sizes and of food quantity, properly arranged in an attractive way.

• Yoghurt Section: This is stand after the 3rd refrigerator and in this section, there's a refrigerator where these yoghurt of different flavours and sizes are kept. Yoghurt, milk, ice-cream and some vita drinks.

• Biscuits and chocolate section: All types of biscuits you may not even be aware of are sold here and this is the section to locate this. In this section, baby's food and milk are sold as well. These includes, golden morn, oats, cornflakes and the like.

Payment Method

Payment is done in cash, transfer, card payment and cheque. They accept all forms of payment except for crypto coins or dollars which I don't know and doubt. They have a code reader which helps them identify prices of goods instead of cramming it in their head. They also have a POS machine to help them receive payment through people's debit and credit cards.

I purchased one sachet holandia yoghurt at the rate of 175 naira and I made payment in cash. They gave me a slip of receipt to show that I purchased the goods and did not steal it.

Review

When I was looking for ingredients to use for a particular learning challenge, I searched everywhere but couldn't find it. It was when I came to market square Uyo that I was able to purchase it at a lower price. If you want complete shopping, I'll implore you visit market square aas they have all you need when it comes to groceries.

Even some international recipes are sold in this grocery store. Can you imagine that a bottle of Star Radler is 700 naira here, but outside it's 1200 and in market square, you can take bottle home? Any drink you want to purchase in bulk and is cold, this place is your reliable plug. Come visit and shop with us at Market Square, Uyo, the closest closed market to you.
