My Day at the Tailoring Shop
Good day everyone, and welcome to my diary!
Here’s how my day went:
I woke up early today, got dressed, and went to the shop. Like I said before, I am an apprentice learning tailoring and fashion design. I spend most of my day at the shop. We open in the morning and we do not close until 6pm.
My shop is behind BCC Bakery. The shop belongs to Mall. Alhassan Twasha. From outside it looks like other shops on the street. But inside we work hard. We sew and design many types of clothes. We make native wear, work clothes, and clothes for big days. We make them to fit your size and your body. We mostly make clothes for women like gowns, skirts, blouses, and wrappers.
We also do other things:
Beading clothes – this one pays well. You need to be slow and careful. People like the shine for wedding and party dresses.
Training people – most of us in the shop are trainees like me. When you are good and can work alone, you graduate. Now we have about 20 apprentices. Most of them are girls. We learn from each other and from Oga Twasha.
Today was easy. We just had some bead work left from yesterday. We had to finish the neck and sleeve parts on two dresses. It was boring to sit and put small beads one by one for hours. But the dresses look nice when we finish
.In the morning, we cut some cloth. We cut sleeves, tops, front parts, back parts, and small pieces for headties. The floor had chalk marks and small pieces of cloth everywhere.
The rest of the day was for sewing. We joined the pieces and made full clothes. We put in zips and added the beads. The sewing machines did not stop. You could smell the hot iron from the table. Now we wait for the owners to come and take their clothes before we close.
And that was my day. Some days are slow, but I learn something new every day.
