SC-S28/W5 – Movie Highlights | “Old is Gold” (The Sound of Music – 1965)
The magic, which old movies have is usually of a special sort that does not go away. And they are there to make us remember that good stories do not rely on modern technology or high action. The Sound of Music (1965) is one of such movies which definitely confirms the olden day adage of old being gold. I have seen this film on YouTube, and it helped me realize the importance that old movies have. Although it was written many years ago, the story, messages, and feelings remain quite powerful even nowadays.
The sound of music narrates the life of Maria, a young lady with a loving heart. She joins the family of children of a strict and reserved widower Captain von Trapp. The family is transformed by Maria and she restores happiness in their family through music, patience and love. The film is not in a hurry, and this gives an opportunity to the viewers to engage with the characters, and get to know their feelings.
What felt different about the storytelling of the movie compared to newer films?
The pace of telling the story is one of the evident differences between The Sound of Music and modern films. Most of new movies are so rapid and vastly depend on special effects, action and use of new technology.
On the contrary, this film is concerned with gradual and cautious narration. Every scene serves its purpose and the story develops organically.
The film is attentive to the dialogue, music, and characterization. One has a time to empathize with the characters and their issues. I observed the feelings were genuine and intense, and not artificial.
In the modern world, there is a tendency to hurry the emotional moments as far as this movie gives them time to breathe. This enhanced the meaning and the remembrance of the story to me.
Did the film age well, or did some parts feel outdated?
The Sound of Music has withered pretty well given its age. Its values, which include love, respect, discipline, and courage, have remained a priority even today.
The music is still beautiful and the natural scenery still appears fresh and serene. The settings and costumes are also correct in the aspect of time, and this provides authenticity to the story.
Nevertheless, there are aspects that are slightly dated to younger audiences. The film is very lengthy and the musical moments are not rushed. This could be slow in the modern day and age of short videos and quick entertainment.
Nevertheless, such aspects make the movie interesting. The message is not weak, and the emotional appeal still exists, which proves that the movie has been able to withstand the test of time.
What do you think made this movie a “classic”?
The sound of music is a classic as it has a classic story and the lessons that it imparts. The film discusses love, family cohesion, liberation, and doing what is right.
These themes are cross-cultural and cut across all generations. A film that could move hearts after several decades really deserves a name of classic.
The music also contributes largely to the memory of the movie. People still remember and love such songs as Do-Re-Mi, My Favorite Things, and Edelweiss.
It is a great movie that is memorable due to the combination of the great story telling, catchy songs, and the characters that are meaningful.
How did the characters or themes relate to today’s world?
The Sound of Music still has a lot of relevance in the current society in terms of characters and themes. Maria is a symbol of good will, happiness and patience. She demonstrates that love and compassion can transform the toughest hearts.
I think that the lesson is highly significant in the modern society as there are a lot of individuals who are faced with anger, stress, and broken relationships.
The political oppression experienced by von Trapp family is also related to the contemporary times as the family manages to stand firm. Nowadays, people are afraid, unfair, and have challenging decisions to make.
The film gives a lesson of being on the right side of the truth and freedom at whatever price. The family unity as a theme is a way that makes us remember that one thing that remains a formidable force is to be united even in trying moments.
To sum it up, The Sound of Music indeed comes as a testimony that old films can shine. Even today, its narration, characters, and teachings are meaningful. I liked viewing this film on YouTube and it made me remember that good stories do not have expiry dates. This film is gold since it is still inspiring, educating and moving generations.
I invite @josepha, @stef1 and @mikitaly to drop a very constructive comments on this post and also to participate in this contest.

I believe Maria must have dance very well to achieve this success for her family.
One thing about the old movies of 90s is that it's really interesting to watch and straight forward not beaten round the bush before you know it will end and request for the continuation and all that.
